Sounds from the engine compartment

A little experience goes a long way...
After 4 years of playing with my 86 911 with 114k miles, and hearing other engines at autox, etc. I am starting to hear all the separate sounds, but don't know what they are suppossed to sound like. Need another 10 years experience.
Just redid the chain tensioners back to oil fed (PO installed old style) and now notice the chain noise. Just changed the fan belt. 5 shims and the belt was a little loose along with a light belt flapping noise. 4 shims and the belt is nice and tight, with a different belt noise. Fan whir plus rhythmic and consistent. 4.5 shims would be just right.
These noises were there before, I am just learning to differentiate them.
Muffler, bumper, valance, a/c compressor, rear sheet metal, heater fan and lid are off the car.
All this noise is probably normal at idle, and disappears with higher rpm in the din from the exhaust. I'm sure they are still there, just can't hear them. No bangs, clanks, or crunchy sounds.
What sounds should I be hearing?
David

David - you must be a musician Few people can differentiate between the various sounds their ears are assaulted with in a car, much less music (although in the 911...it's the same thing).

I can hear valve train noise - since when I adjusted my valves I did a poor job of it and there was some train noise afterwards. I can certainly hear the muffler/exhaust noise...and I have heard my fan belt on occasion, but the fan itself is mostly just background.

Mostly I hear the engine breathing - I hear a little intake noise, but mostly exhaust and general crank sound. I hear the transmission a bit, too. Luckily I don't often hear it grind, but when it does, it means I just nicked reverse coming out of fifth.

I hear a LOT of wind noise! I have a Targa. A lot of it is caused by the top itself, but there's also some that is the air going over the metal trim peices on the windshield seal. I need to call the glass company that did my windshield about that.

Sometimes I hear the CD player. Not often though, unless I turn it way up....

Just gonna throw this out to OldSkul. Marshall, Strat, Tele, B-3. Any of these terms hit home?
