Help with an alternator
I need some help in identifying an alternator for my car. I have a 85 911 Carrera 3.2. The diodes or regulator are dying in the car (has an overvoltage condition from time to time) and I wanted to find a spare before it pukes somewhere on the road. I can overhaul it but the shops here want two days and I am trying to do it without the down time.
I have an alternator here at the house ( a Paris Rhone model) that says on the back cover: E4 14V 90A PORSCHE 911 603 120 05 J The regulator has the number "96" cast in the housing and its secured with two bolts. Problem with this alternator is that while in shipping it to my house it was dropped and the back housing was cracked and the unit is not serviceable. I have found one for sale that is also a Paris Rhone model but the gent says that it has these markings: 14 V and 25 A on the back. I have seen photos of the back of this alternator and the regulator is secured with twoscrews as well. The photos are not focused good enough to tell what the smaller writing is on the back so I am not sure but it looks identical to the one I have here with the cracked case. Fast forward to the new Bentley manual and it shows a photo of what appears to be exactly the same alternator, but with the regulator with FOUR screws holding it on. Anyone have an idea what the difference is between these three and did Paris Rhone really come in a 25 Amp version? Seems like this would be way too little capacity for any late model 911. All three are visually (except for the regulator) exactly the same. Does anyone know if the alternator in the Bently manual is the correct one or are they interchangeable? As long as the alternator fits (assume they all of the PR series fit) does it matter how many screws the regulator has? Thanks, JoeA |

Here is a picture off the alt of my 88, same as your old unit. ![]() I'm not sure that Paris Rhone units came in 25A for later 911's. I would try and get your existing one fixed or get a 90A unit as a repalcement. I just got mine refurbed from a shop in less than 1 day for $125. Looked like new after it was done. Thanks for the picture and advise. Am still looking for someone to overhaul my unit faster and for a better price. $180 and two days is a bit high of a price. My only guess on the other alternator is that the gent is miss-reading the data on the back and it must say 14V 75A instead of 25 amp but he has not gotten back to me as of yet. Thanks again and if anyone knows what the unit with four mounting screws is, please let me know. The serial number on the unit that I have (with two screws) shows it to be a 90 amp model, but there could be several different variations of this out in the field. Thx, JAo |
