Moving shifter backward ?!
Does someone ever try to move the shifter back on a early 911 ; like the 911R to have a short and staright shifter ?? Have you also move back the handbrake lever ? Any comments on the job itself or on performance after ?

That's a cool pic, I never knew the 911R moved the shifter back.
Hargett makes a shifter like that. Hargett Shifter Systems

I've done it as part of my neverending '72 hotrod project. As with many improvements, one seemingly simple modification iniatiates a whole cascade of changes that are required if the whole thing is to work as desired. My wife describes this car as "a lifetime of misplaced endevor".

I've got the Hargett shifter in my 87 911 Turbo and it makes a world of difference. My buddy has one in his as well. It places the shifter back and up making shifts much easier to make, especially when strapped in for the track.

I did it mostly for ergonomic considerations. Because the car is a retirement project it is by nature somewhat obsessive-compulsive (I'm a mech engineer) and I'm not figuring time and effort into the equation in a "real world" way. I moved the handbrake assy back and modified it so that the cables could remain unaltered and made some linkage improvements. If you were willing to make more compromises than I was (like shortening the brake handle), it could be done more simply. Generally I would say this is worth doing to a race car but not for the street.
hope this helps, Phil |
