Small-Block Chevy V8 powered 911's
I know most of you will be disgusted and laugh at this, but I just read about it. Renegade is the company name, take a look:
http://www.renegadehybrids.com/indexx.html (scroll over conversion kits/911 and click small block chevy) They're even doing LS1's: http://www.renegadehybrids.com/PressReleases/PR09.html They claim with aluminum heads the weight is comparable to a 930 turbo setup. You can pretty much get everything to do a swap for 6-8k. |

![]() I am certainly NOT going to be critical about a V8 swap given the fact that my 74 911 has nothing stock left in it. But with the Chevy engine you lose most of the mistique of the old 911. The engine is the hearth of a car. And it's not just an HP and torque figure. Plus with 500hp under the decklid I guess you'd need to re-do the suspensions and brakes. But if I had to put a water pumper in my 911 I'd look at a 996 engine first. You keep the low center of gravity and they are possibly lighter than the V8. And you can get a new one from Porsche for cheap these days. |

Renegage has been around for years.....for a purist....it is a big NO-NO.....but there have been lots of them done.....if you can get water temps down and keep them down....I think it is a decent alternative....I know there is one member on the board that has one...and if I am not mistaken it was in Excellence very recently.....It sure makes financial sense to me.....especially if you are building a "bastard" car anyway and not concerned with keeping things original.....Im sure the value of the car when resale time comes would not be as high... but that is just my opinion

My thought is you should buy a 944 for $2K, and stick a Chevy SB in that. If $6 to $8K is the quote Renegade gave you, you'd have an entirely new car for less than $10K which would out perform many new cars.

im not saying i want to do it, i just read through the site. Looking at their prices I found it would cost 6-8k to do the project yourself. I think the reason most of us buy porsche's is because of the whole experience which mainly includes the feel and sound of a flat 6 (even if it doesn't produce much hp)

How soon before Jack chimes in to say he doesn't have a problem with them?
How soon before eleventeen guys say that putting a V8 into a 911 is a heresy equivalent to incest, genocide, etc? Oh, and the inevitable picture of a 928 and someone saying they wouldn't have as much problem with the idea if it were an engine "...out of one of these"? Hasn't this thread been done....at least (charitably?) 10 times?

I'm with dd74 and have actually been researching this a little. LS1 or LS2 in a 944 or even better with a 951 shell (better transmission and brakes) Some nice RA-1's and you'll be the car to pass at your local track day.

Renegade has done a sgnificant amount of R&d on 914's and SBC's (or others too, for that matter). I'm not so offended by a V8 in a teener. A lump in a 911 is wrong and in the wrong place.

Try a websearch on "grass roots racing" and "renegade hybrids". Grassroots had Renegade put one of these together for them for a series of articles. After Grassroots took "delivery" (over time and over budget IIRC) and after extensive "tweaking" the results were far from impressive. I'm sure it can be done correctly and nicely but not for $6-8 grand.
