915 Question

I have a 71 915 Tranny. I need to replace the Input shaft Seal because it is leaking. On this particular tranny to my knowledge it must be pressed out from the Inside of the tranny.

I was wondering if it is possible to JUST pull out the Differential without removing all the gears(front of tranny), and replace the seal?

Also, when putting the Differential back in place (im not planning on Dissaembling the differential itself, just removal) Is there a concern with Spooling it? Or is it just installing the diff so the gears mesh together?

ANY help is appreciated.

Mitch

I thought 72 was the first year of the 915?

I think not; the input shaft will be in place and the seal is installed/seated from the inside of the differential housing. How will you get the seal over the input shaft which passes through the bore and into the inside of guide sleeve on the clutch side of the bell housing? I believe a section of the bore is smaller than the OD of the seal and the seal will be damaged if installed from the clutch side.

When my later 915 was rebuilt this spring we had a leak at the input shaft seal. We pulled the engine and tranny, then pulled them apart. There is a metal sleeve which was removed to expose the seal. The sleeve is bolted in place. Once those are removed then the tube must be pulled out. There are two holes in the sleeve which should allow you to attach a puller and remove the sleeve. We actually used two long bars that fit in the holes and then pried against the trans case. They came out pretty easy. Pull the seal out and put in the new one. No other tranny disassembly was required for this job. We put the tranny and engine back together and up in the car. Total time for the R & R and drive home, 5.5 hours.

Tony, I wish mine was that easy. The tranny you are referreing to would be a late model 73+. The 72-73 dont have access from the Bell housing side w/ the 2 nuts/screws on the sleeve. the sleeve is Part of the Case, unfortunately.

Jim. Thanks for the input. Let me ask, Once i pull the gears apart and get to the Differential. Is it just a matter of unbolting the side cover on the diff and sliding it out? Press out and press in the new input seal, then Slide the Diff back in place... OR is there some Special Procedure that needs to be done to make sure it works smoothly/quietly? Does it need to be Spooled?
What year tranny was the one you rebuilt, was it like the One I've got? What tools were Required, have you got any for sale?

HI Mitch sorry you will have to pull the gear cluster out as the oil seal is not re-placeable with out removing the in-put shaft. parts required, Gasket set and a pinion nut , strip every thing off the pinion shaft and assemble dry, if you have a engine stand , it's a Saturday job. get a Bentley book for the strip of a 915 box .

regards mike
