I would like to lose the blower in teh engine compoartment but I don't want to lose what little heat I get.
I have done a search but didn't find what info I was looking for. Is it possible to just route the HE hoses to bypass the blower? More specifically, do I need the left side blockoff plate to do anything like this? Thanks,

Do a search for "heater backdate" and all will be revealed. The backdate will remove the blower and replace some engine tin with earlier style pieces. At other then idle the engine cooling fan will push enough hot air to easily heat the cabin especially if you have SSI's. In fact, the only reason the blower in the engine bay only provides heat at idle. With SSI's and heater backdate in my car I can tolerate will heat for only a minute.

I don't have SSI's. Just the stock HE with Euro premuffler.
I'll do another search and look for more info.

if your stock HE leak to cold Mich winters you may want to go back to using the blower.
SSI's are tighter than a crabs ass and that's water tight.

better look at this this for the electrics, especially if you have "automatic heat"
83 SC: Heat backdate or suppression - advice & engine compartment blower mystery & Help! Does anyone understand the footwell blower circuit? You'll need the LHS shroud duct and new engine tin on that side. You'll be using the footwell blowers to drag in the hot air from the HE's. I haven't done it yet but I soon will, with 993 HE's. Phil

On an SC you are going to have to get very creative with the ducting once you remove the blower. Unfortunately, that is going to be half the battle. On my 78SC before the rebuild I had the stock HE and fan..heat was nothing to write home about. When the blower finally died the heat was minimal. I learned after the fact that a nonworking blower actually blocked air flow.
Anyway, once I installed SSI's and had tons of heat..but only when the car was moving and the engine spinning at 3K. I've found the greatest improvement to my heating was adding footwell blowers. In the simplest of configurations they can be installed and powered by the rear blower relay. The relay is triggered by the two levers between the seats the way the original blower was but you will need to provide a fan speed switch and install the resistive circuit for the speed control. Its a bit involved but not all that difficult. Do a search on Footwell Blowers. Also, my car never had heat the way it does now

I don't know all the differences between the SC and Carrera's but if you have the lever between the seats, that's all you need. I took my blower out and when the engine is at idle there isn't much if any heat, but once you get going there is plenty. You'll have to turn it down. I don't think there's any need for the footwell blowers, IMO.
Good Luck! If you need any help just let me know and I'll come up that way and give you a hand.....

+1 to what arcsine said. do a search on 'heater backdate'. this is a very common mod..

Here are the parts you will need:
Left hot air duct, 930.106.321.02, list $148.20 4 plastic nuts, 999.591.592.40, list $.25 each 2 rubber plugs, 999.703.044.50, list $.77 each Right hot air duct, 911.106.327.00, list $53.45 Right engine cover plate, 911.106.036.00, list $14.89 Right engine cover, 911.106.827.00, list $5.04 Right air duct support, 911.106.331.00, list $1.30 4 feet of 2 1/2" SCAT hose (silicone rubber-based, good to 450 degrees) from Aircraft Spruce and Specialty, cost $21. The one piece of metal not listed here is an section of engine tin from a turbo car for the left hand side. This turbo section allows for a straight shot from the HE's to the duct on the engine. Without it, the left hand hose has to make some tight turns to connect the duct/HE. Not impossible but not easy either. I must admit I am ignorant of the usefulness of the heater backdate with stock HE's. I have only done this with SSI's.

Wayne,
Why do you need heat? It's 44 degrees out there! Of course it's going down to 28 tonight and tomorrow will not get over 30. Oh well, December in MI!

apologies Wayne, should have read your sig before posting. SC's are obviously diff. to Carreras.
Not to hijack thread but would someone know what parts are required for a similar operation for '84 Carrera modded with 993 HE's or SSI's? All I know is RHS & LHS shroud ducts but unclear about engine tin etc. Thanks, Phil

Gary - the purpose of the backdate with stock exchangers is to get rid of 5-6 pounds and unclutter the engine compartment. My blower quit working anyway, so I took it and the other junk out, and engine bay looks much better. Still get plenty of heat.

i get tons of heat without a blower. only thing is, you get no heat blowing on you unless you're moving..otherwise, it's toasty. it's been good enough for me in arkansas winters though.

Down south I would bet it isn't much of an issue..on the east coast or up there by them big ass lakes its a different story. I didn't think I needed additional forced air with my SSI's until leaving a friend's house one cold december evening. I warmed the car up for a few minutes in his driveway while I waitied in the house. I got back in only to find the car was just as cold as it was before I had started it! It took a long time to force that cold air out on the ride home. Frooze my nuts off for most of the way. Added the footwell blowers the next month. The blowers and the wye connectors are a great upgrade and make a huge comfort improvement. I can now preheat the cabin and those little side vents keep the side windows from fogging up. The car is almost modern!

Hi,
I would like to do the backdate on my 82SC as well. I already have SSI but where can I get the right and left air duct to a decent price? Canīt find them in the catalogue. Has anybody used once? By the way Iīd love to live in the USA we pay double the price for the parts here. Last edited by por911sche; 12-19-2006 at 11:55 PM.. |
