Identifying AN Fittings

How do you you measure AN fitttings? I'm trying to match up some fuel lines of various sizes and it doesn't say the size on the fitting anyplace. Is there a chart somewhere comparing the outside dimensions?

Thanks, John

I'm sure you've found this info by now but 6AN = 6/16 or 3/8. Put the AN # over 16 to find the inch size.

Thanks for the help. So, if the hose ID is 3/8" that would make it an AN-8 fitting? The fitting ID's don't seem tomatch up exactly. I'm just trying to identify a bunch of fittings I have.

No a -8 is not 3/8", it is 1/2". See the note Paul wrote you. Put the dash number over 16. EX...-3 = 3/16", -4 = 1/4", -6 = 3/8", etc. BTW the AN stands for Army/Navy.

AN, JIC, and SAE

AN is the same as JIC also. The taper on the mateing surface of the fitting is 37 degrees. Not to be confused with SAE fittings which are 45 degrees, although on fittings size -8 or smaller, they can interchange in a pinch. There are gauges availble to check the number of threads and the angle of the tapered seat. They are in little sets similar in design to feeler gauges.

if you have never put any together you in for a treat trying to get the hose from fraying . make sure and tape the area you are going to cut and keep the tape on there as you push the fitting over the hose.

Apply rubber lube on the hose end also helps installing the hose into the fitting. A tetanus shot also helps since there's a tendency to penetrate finger skin with SS braid.

FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT DON,T WANT TO PUT OUT THE BIG BUCKS
FOR NEW GO TO musclemotor@mindspring.com , they have aeroquip used fittings and hose from NASCAR motors that have only been used once!! No kidding you can save a bunch of $$$$.
I,ve purchased an-16 for oil lines and an-6 for fuel line replacement on my 87 Carrera. Lots cheaper than the Porsche $500.00 replacement parts.

The system is based on 1/16 's.
So 8= 1/2" etc.
Also...there are several angles in the system (sealing angles).
There are also some fittings that have sealing O-rings in them.
Make sure the O-rings match the fluid going thru.
Bob
