1988 911 Tail Problem
I have an aftermarket (although factory made) tail on my 911. The problem is, when I try to open to lid to the engine compartment, it requires an additional set of hands. I need one person to pull the latch and one person to pull up on the lid. It appears the tail is too heavy. And the latch is difficult to pull. Do I need to replace the latch in the door; the latch at the engine; or just live with it (not something I want to do)? Anyone know of a fix?

Yaami,
I had exactly the same problem after I first put a turbo tail on. You need to either a)adjust the male end on the lid or b)adjust the linkage on the female end. This was I while ago so I don't remember the exact details but if you've got any more questions just ask. Good luck. ------------------ Jeff 1976 911S |

I too have a full glass tail and it is heavy. I installed the dual piston hood lifters (from Pelican) and that gave enough lift to pop the latch and hold up the lid.
Problem is the dual kit put both pistons on the same side (since there is no bracket on the right side). My tail (being fiberglass) now warps up a bit on the left side when shut. Got to live with it until I either install a bracket on the right or put a real tail on the car. Hope this helps. Doug '84 911 ROW |

Doug,
I had the same problem as you, except instead of ordering the dual shock setup from Pelican, I asked for and purchased the same setup used on 930s with shocks on both sides. Haven't put it on yet(and haven't figured how) but it's amazing what the people at Pelican can find for you. ------------------ Jeff 1976 911S |

About a year ago I added a factory Carrera tail to my '87. The body shop I used said that I needed to change the spring on the latch mechanism. With a stronger spring the rear deck lid will 'pop' up when the release lever is pulled. Adding second decklid shock only serves to keep the now heavier assembly open.
I don't have the parts numbers which show two different springs, but my deck lid opens without any problems so I'm inclined to believe it's true. YMMV Kevin '87 Carrera 3.2 |
