Crash Pics *** Need input!!!
I finaly settled down enough to post pics of my 88 carrera in critical condition. I made the mistake of letting a poor driver borrow my baby, now look at this mess!!!
LET THIS BE A REMINDER.... MAKE SURE YOU KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THE DRIVING HISTORY OF ANYONE YOU LET TOUCH YOUR BABY....!!!! When the legal issues settle down, I will explain in detail. For now it looks like I will be stuck with the tab. Please take a look at these pics. and determine if it is worth fixing and also how much would this damage cost me. I will also be looking for used parts if I choose to repair it. All help would be appreciated... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1167269339.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1167269358.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1167269371.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1167269389.jpg |
Do you own a fire arm?
|
Ohh yeah... I was pissed.. He immediatly wrote me a check of his entire savings for 4,000.00.. still not enough!!
|
Holy s***, what did he slide into, a wall?
|
I was told he is very lucky and also the car is very tough.. he lost it going over 100 mph.. spun 2 times then hit the guard rail.. I am glad he didnt die..
|
I'm sure there are experienced bodymen eyeing this disaster, and I'll defer to their opinons, but why don't you take it to a few body shops for first hand estimates--they're usually free--and they can also see if there is possible bending of the unibody. From there, it would be easier to decide if repair was worth it. From the shots though, it looks like a lot of labor regardless of the parts you pick up. Sorry to see such a sad situation, you have lots of sympathy from this board. Good luck.

Right front fender $200
front bumper smile $50 right front bumper extension spacer and accordion rubber $20 door- usually around $350-500 complete mirror- see door top mechanism parts? it appears to be bowed in right rear qtr panel- usually around $200-350 oil tank- $150 rear deck lid- $200 tail lamp assy- $100 would like to see more pics of the inner jams. and pics of the driver side door open and closed. You need ot make sure the chassis is not twisted is the rear wheel damaged in any way? front wheel? could indicate suspension repairs needed as well. all the external stuff is available at prices above (with exception of the top parts- need to see what is broken there) |
4k will cover it at the right place, this is why i dont let people drive my car, they immediately go to the floor and dump the clutch, aint their car, Kevin

...with enough money anything can be fixed.
That said, your vehicle has alot of sheet metal damage and I cannot tell if the unibody has been damaged. Based on the damages per the limited photos it could be a total. My suggestion is to have good body shop write a repair estimate sheet and see where you are. ESTIMATING IS NOT A PERFECT SCIENCE but will give you a reference point. Repair supplements are a fact of life. Consider this if you must repair the vehicle out of pocket. Does your p-car have collision/comprehensive coverage? (not sure of the accident facts...looks like the car hit a speeding guardrail) This might be a good time to turn in an insurance claim and learn from this ordeal. If you do not have collision, did the driver of your vehicle have collision on one of his/her own vehicles? Insurance law varies from state to state. A solid insurance premise is that insurance follows the vehicle then the driver. If you do not have collision/comp and the driver of your vehicle does, it is very possible you can present a claim for your damages to his carrier as an excess collision claim. (similar premise as if you damaged a rental vehicle). For those who are reading this remember: when you loan out your car you also loan out your insurance policy. Good luck |
brings a tear to the eye. At least he tried to reimburse you. Sounds like he learned his lesson. Hope its back on the road soon :) chin up

Do you need help getting rid of the body?
From what it looks like mostly body work - |

So far I think I will keep the body and repair even if the insurance company totals the car... Thanks!

What kind of "friends" do you people have?
I don't know anybody among my reasonable circle of friends and good acquaintances who I won't allow to drive my SC track car (and a number of them have). My wife drives it. (Admittedly she just did the Baja 1000 as a navigator in a Hummer.) My daughter drives it. (She's faster than I am.) My friend Jim Catalano's 16-year-old son Sam drives it. (I suspect in a couple of years he'll be faster too.) Several people on this board have shown up in my driveway and I've tossed them the keys. Jeez! |
I am pulling the doors off my 70t to replace with fiberglass I will also have a set of doors off a 912 in a week. if anything of these will fit your car I will give you one, you pay the shipping. maybe you could transfer the interior bits, I dont know if it will work, someone else might, But I thought I would help lessen the pain if possible.
|
My opinion if that the car is not a total, but I would follow TRE's advice and look for concealed damage before feeling confident. Any smackup involving those speeds can produce significant damage. OTOH, sometimes you get a break.
Obviously not the kind of break you were looking for. Very sorry about this. I wrecked a friend's car many (40) years ago, and I paid it off entirely by selling my car. I lost a lot in that deal, respect of many amongst other things. I seldom drive other's cars to this day. |
xclaim, I just noticed you were in bowie, Im not to far away either so in addition to parts i can assist with, Ill be happy to led a wrench or two to assist in the rebuild. Where did the accident take place?

BBaer6676 ---
The crash happened on 495 between Central ave and Hwy 4 exit. Wow... what can I say.. What a good group. bbaer6676, I wish the world had more people like you. I will let you know if I need help. THANKS!!!!!! |
Wow...carnage....I am very sorry to see and hear!
I used to work at my Uncle's bodyshop and we fixed cars that were way worse than that. Not sure if that helps. $4K will prob. cover the actual damage repair but not the paint hopefully no bent chassis and suspension pieces. An excellent re-spray entire car will be an easy $2500-$3000, strip, primer, 3coats base, 4coats clear and then water-sand. So I would budget $8K. Yasin |
Sorry to see a nice car crashed. This is what I always affraid when a "none car guys" friend ask to drive my car. It's always a hard situation.
|
This is why my seat is bolted down - Best excuse ever "the car is set up for me - the seat doesn't even move!"
That said - sorry to see the pics of the car. Hopefully all can be fixed. AM |
I'm sorry to see this.
Very unfortunate. If you can fix it yourself, your friend should be bye your side the entire time helping out. If he isn't, then I'd say he wasn't a friend to begin with. Even someone with no mechanics experience can hand tools and beers to you while you work. He might just learn something too. Crappy situation, but I wouldn't write a true friend off, even if he pissed me off that bad. He was stupid and hopefully he learned from his mistake without paying with his life. My $.02, Matt |
It's definitely fixable. I would take advantage of the situation and go with a TL conversion.
|
Sheesh, very sorry to see this. My best to you and hope you are able to repair and keep her on the road.

I hope I'm wrong but I don't think 4k would come close to covering that, at least not on the east coast. 4 k would not even cover the complete car re-paint from a decent shop that would be needed to make the car look whole again.
My relatively un-educated guess is -5-8 k for a re-paint up to Porsche standards -4-8k in body work Can the guy who did this report it on his insurance? I'm not sure how that works, but if so he should, you don't want to have this on your record if you can help it. |
I have to say; they guy was cool to write you a check.. but I would ask him to provide the rest if it comes to that.. there is this word in the dictionary.. its under the R section.. scroll down..
R-E-S-P-O-N-S-I-B-I-L-I-T-Y Funny thing; if he pays for this and makes it right he will feel so much better about himself. Get a few quotes and let him know when ASAP what its gonna come to so he can prepare himself mentally.. And make sure its made RIGHT.. check the unibody! My guess is if you look in the trunk you might have a krinkle right in front if the strut mount structure.. maybe. Tell him $4k might cover the paint. He needs to take a loan out if he has no insurance. Small claims court is not where you want this to go but its a possibility.. BTW.. this car is a total. |

sorry to see such a tragedy, at least no one was hurt.
I have an 86 coupe right rear quarter that I can cut to your bodyshop specs when the time comes. |
I would guess the talk of "small-claims court" and the like is pointless. I'm no lawyer, but I think what any court would conclude is encapsulated in the original poster's very first message: "I made the mistake..."
I would doubt that the guy who crashed the car has any responsibility beyond what he volunteers, since he was willingly and voluntarily given the car to drive, no waiver signed, no financial responsibilities specified. |
I had a very simular crash in my SC. Take a VERY close look
in the engine compartment on both sides near/under the fuse panel and near/under the oil filter. Look for creases or uneveness in these areas. Also closely look at your rear engine brace by the fan... that connects to the engine mounts. See if it is straight. Highly possible that there is a bent frame if you notice anything. If the frame is OK... you can probably make it out OK. Good Luck ! Chuck |

sounds like a case for judge judy.
|
Wow, I hate to see that. I'm sorry about your car. The guy driving it was careless and irresponsible to the extreme to drive your car that fast. He needs to pay for the whole thing, no matter what! I would assume that if the car was crashed at that rate of speed, that there is lot of damage that isn't immediately obvious that would cost $$$ to fix. Good luck!
BTW, I've never driven anyone else's Porsche and only a select few have driven my car. Anyone driving someone else's car "like they stole it" needs to pay up!! |
Side note, any significance to the the screen name? It's commonly used as a reference to some of us who worked for a particular company that went Chp 7.
|
calling911, it's not a joke at all. I imagine a judge saying, "Did you give this person the unrestricted right to drive your car?"
"Yes, your honor, I told him to take it for a spin and have fun." "Case dismissed." A lawyer may well tell me that's not what would happen at all, but it won't be the first time I'm wrong. I'll be interested to hear informed comment, though posters saying, "the guy hasta pay up" mean nothing. I had a friend land one of my airplanes gear-up once, against which this car's damage is minimal. Circumstances conspired to help cause the accident, he at least paid for a new prop, which costs a lot more than a used 911, and I took care of the rest. He's still a good friend (and a better pilot...). |

I dont think so... thats just not how any sane judge would interpret someone loaning a car.. check your policy.. you are insured on any car u drive in the united states.. ACCEPT Puerto Rico.. nobody will insure you in Puerto Rico accept Puerto Rico insurance. |
My point exactly: wad up the rental agreement and the won't give you the car. That's _why_ they make you sign the agreement taking responsibility.
And what is your expertise in this area, aside from being unable to spell? |
