Targa turbulence

Anyone know what causes such tremendous wind turbulence in a Targa with the top off? I thought initially it was wind hitting the rear of the cab, where the roll bar is, but the noise is very loud with the windows up which eliminates wind on the roll bar. I guess it must be the top of the windshield?

My brother's Z3 is extremely quiet with the top down. Any ideas how this can be minimized? I assume that other Targas are noisey as well.

YUP, mine is loud (wind noise) top on or off. On my early car a great deal of the wind noise is actually from the windshield pillar and vent window region. Of course the engine 'music', tranny whine and road noise drowns it out below 80mph or so, then the wind takes over.

Took my first road trip since rebuild to see my Gators play last weekend. Jeez, at 90 with the top off its quieter if you just stick your head out the window.

After some testing tonight, the noise is from the wind traversing the targa seal at the windshield. Covered it with some black painters masking tape and, ah yes, engine sounds and greatly reduced wind noise! Now for a fab that looks good.

Several authors have mentioned the drip rails along each side of the windshield as sources of drag and turbulence ... when you combine the movable wing vents on Targa's you introduce even more causes for noise! I have noticed that my Targa is very quiet with the top off and both sides' wing-vents closed and windows rolled up ... even at 125-140 mph, but especially at 90-100 mph!

This might be a stupid question, but what are wing vents?

I kinda like the wind noise.

It's not often I get to drive with top off here in the UK so its a bit of a novelty. :-)

Alex.

Alex,

I guess people who call fenders 'wings' would wonder about that ... let's see, 935's had louvers on top of the fenders that might qualify as 'wing vents' ... in the UK!

Seriously, the movable, triangular, windows just forward of the regular, full-sized rectangular window on Targas are called wing vents in the USA ... they can be pivoted on hinges, so they stick out into the windstream, presumably improving ventilation. All early 911's had them, but sometime in the mid-'70's coupes had them 'fixed' in place ... truthfully, I don't know what you call a fixed window that was formerly a wing vent!
