'74 3.0 RS?

'74 3.0 RS?

Saw this on eBay with a $125k opening bid: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=474633913&r=0&t=0

Did this person mean to list an RSR or was there a 3.0 RS in '74?

The description of this car on eBay definately falls in the 'human of not too many words' department!

Regards,

Kurt

There was indeed an RS in 1974, and it had a 3.0 liter engine that was the forerunner to the engines for the 930/Carrera3.0/SC/3.2, and beyond.

If this particular car is the real deal, reasonably priced, and road registrable, it would be worth snapping up!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but these things produced around 270bhp, and weighed under 1000kg.

Quite the animal in the right hands.

The Carrera RS3.0 put out 230bhp(DIN)@6200 RPM. Torque was 275@5000 RPMs. It was MFI.
It weighed 900kg. Only 59 were built. The one for sale is #41.
Being that it's probably the only one for sale in the world at this particular time he doesn't feel the need for fancy advertisement.

I want I want I want...

In Paul Frere's Oct. 1974 road test in Road & Track he listed 2410 lbs as the curb weight, about 195 kg over the 900 figure! It did 0-60 in 5.2 seconds, just about identical with the '76-'77 Turbos! The list price in Germany was cited as approx. $25K. Clearly, the most desirable normally aspirated 911 on the planet, and as most were converted to RSR specs and raced, perhaps the rarest of all road-going 911's, with more likely fewer around on the street than the elusive'67-'69 911R! It had the brakes from a 917-30!!! The homologation weight was 900 kg. I wonder if the person who listed that eBay auction really is crazy enough to believe he will get any bids with a zero feedback record, and no picture of the car?

Incidentally, Matt, your RHD (right-hand drive) '74 Carrera Coupe was tested in the 28 Dec. 1974 issue of Motor, but the test car had 180 mph speedo, oil pressure gauge calibrated in psi, and oil temp gauge calibrated in Fahrenheit!!! USA gauges in a UK RHD model, what a combination!

Any pics around of this RS? Some archival enthusiast is bound to have one on this BB.

I sent the guy a simple inquiry, and this is what he wrote back. He didn't give his name. The picture above is one I found on the internet. It's not the car that's for sale.

Quote:
Thanks for the inquiry. The RS was originally purchased by the president of Mexico on January 25, 1974, as part of his Porsche collection. I am the third owner. The RS is in original condition, including paint, interior and tires, and has 33,961 km, or 21,090 actual miles. I also have all of the original papers, including the dealer purchase order. Porsche issued a Certificate of Authenticity on the RS on February 23, 2000. The current Certificate of Title has no liens. The RS is considered the finest touring/racing car ever developed, eclipsing the venable Ferrari 250 GTO, which I have raced in four Tour de France. The best place to read about and see lots of photos of the RS 3.0 is in the book Porsche 911 R-RS-RSR by John Starkey. Starkey's book also lists the chassis numbers of all 47 RS 3.0's ever built. The chassis number of my RS is 911.460.9041. The car is currently at a dealer in New York and probably will sell in the next week or so. If you would like a personal preview of the car, please let me know, but time is of the essence. The last RS 3.0 sold at auction in Monterrey seven years ago for approximately $250,000.

The RS 3.0 is shown on p. 15 of the 2nd ed. of Bruce's Handbook ... as well in the usual books by Frere, Ludvigsen, Barth, etc.

And everyone can go vote for it at the model of the month section of the Porsche web site:
http://www.us.porsche.com/english/unlimited/motm/vote.htm

Sure, some of you will want to vote for the 2.7RS, some maybe even for the 964 or 993. Decisions, decisions. I like the 3.0 because I dig the 70's.

Why is there so much drool on my keyboard?
