What information can i get out of achassis number?

Hi, i just bought a 1976 911 S Targa US, with chassis number 9116210653, and I am currently waiting for it to be delivered. I know that the 3 fist siffers stands for the model 911, and that the 4th sifffer is the model year 1976. But does the other siffers tell me anything significant? I have heard that it is important to match this chassis number to the engine number, is this correct, and why would it be important? Should i try to get any other numbers from the car, I have hards of something called VIN? number, is this important for me? This is my first post in this forum so I hope i get some good answers even though you dont know me from previous posting. Regards Kenneth, Norway. | ||

Kenneth, Welcome to the boards and congratulations on your car! Others with more expertise will respond, I'm sure, but here is some simple information to your questions. The VIN number is the Vehicle Identification Number, and is the one you found on the chassis. You are correct about the 911 digits and the 6 digit. The remaining digits I'm not sure about but you can find sights on the web that can explain them. The VIN is the way the car is tracked and legally identified with an owner. Also, it is used to research any title problems or accidents in the history of the car. It is a must item to know. As far as "matching" engine numbers, they don't match to the exact vehicle, but to the model, year, destination, etc. of the car. I know little about engine numbers but others on the board can help. It is important that the engine "matches" the car only if it has been represented as such, or if you feel it is important for orginality, and to see if the engine has been replaced sometime in the life of the car. I hope this gets you started. Welcome once again. Larry

Welcome Kenneth ! Good to see yet another Scandinavian on Pelican! I have a Carrera 85 and I believe they changed the VIN serious, so I can´t tell you what yours mean exactly. My VIN tells me where it was built, for what market, what year, what body (coupe), the individual car series number and that it is a 911. Better informed will chip in. Very nice looking Porsche! Congrats!

Kenneth, According to my "Red Book", it's a 911S Targa USA. #653 of 2,175. Welcome to the madness and also another Mid-year beating. Don't worry though middies are the best. BTW check out Mid-9.net
