Dumb-Dumb welding question??
 

Quick welding question for you welders out there....

I have a crack in a wastegate pipe on my 951 where the pipe meets the flange. The pipe is stainless (non-magnetic) and the the flange appears to be cast regular steel. Can they be welded? Can I do it with my MIG? The reason I ask is that they appear to be fused in some fashion from the factory and the replacement part is one piece not a seperate pipe and flange.

if it is cast iron i have had luck with using stainless welding rods and arc welding it...you have to go very slow and make sure that you dont over heat it. you will want to tap on the welds as you weld it. there is a cast iron rod for arc but i have had better luck with stainless.

It can be MiG'ed with regular steel wire . I would take it off and have it TiG'ed though.

Okay, I think I will run it by a machine shop today and see what they say.

It's been a long time, but I seem to remember that there was a factory update for that part to prevent cracks???? You may want to post this on some 944 boards.

It helps to preheat and slow cool a cast part. My welding instructor did a CI manifold that way using only a MIG. I didn't see them change the wire, but that's it, I couldn't see all of what was going on. I thought he would have gone into the stick welder booth.

I have Googled such a question and gotten lots of info.

Just FYI, you can use steel MIG wire on stainless and stainless on steel. It just means that the mild steel wire will rust on stainless. For stainless on stainless you need to use Stargon instead of Co2/Argon mix.

Thanks for the tips guys, I used my MIG on it tonight and it welded up just fine. I was able to weld the OD and the ID both.
