The result: fun on the track

After the engine swap and all the other work, I finally got to run the thing wide open at Willow Springs. Click on the picture for a bigger version.

For a closer look, you can click here to see the brake ducts and the aluminum scoop I put in for the oil cooler. Both worked. Oil temps never got above 230, and the brakes were strong all day.

Unfortunately, I missed the last two runs because the brake light activator switch failed. Still, considering the amount of new hardware in place, the thing tested like a dream!

Jack,

Shweeet! You were definately in the fun zone on lap 6. We need the sans Pumpkins version so we can concentrate on the sound of that new motor! I believe the only tip I can give you is that your foot and the floorboard must become one if you want to keep up with that turbo? hitting the straight.

I'm still in the motor break-in period, but testing the video setup now. I have a date at Sebring next month.

Keep up the good work
Joe

Holy Cow, Jack!

From that picture, it looks like you have the suspension set-up perfect!

What size wheels/tires are you running in the rear? They look fat! 911 off-set or 944 off-set?

Best of luck to you in your new 'toy' - you have done a remarkable job!

If I can grow my cajones large enough, I might try to meet you for a weekend session when my car is complete! : ) I'm down in Solana Beach.

Best Regards,

Kurt

Joe -

The video clips are from the old, 125 hp engine. Chasing the silver 993 (I think it was an S, but not a turbo), I definitely had the pedal sandwiched to the floor. With the new engine, I think the results would be different. His car is a lot heavier than mine.

Pretty soon I'll put up new video from this last event. The car has a whole different sound and feel to it, now. The suspension and the engine make an incredible difference.

Kurt -

You're right, Steve Alarcon (at Suspension Specialties) got the swaybars dialed in right on the first try. It's handling is awesome. No tire lifts this time out!

Those are 8-inchers with the 911 offset (from an 86 turbo, I think) in the back, under SC flares, with 245s on them. They were just polished and painted by Al Reed in Anaheim. In front, I have my old set of 6-inch wheels with 205s. I want to go wider there, and I have a set of 7-inch wheels that Al Reed also did. But the 225 tires I put on them will not fit in my wheel wells. Every car is unique, I guess. Next I'm going to either try 215s or 205s on the 7-inch wheels. It'll fill up the fender better, and make for more stable sidewalls on the tires.

Obin,

I got the AJ-USA brake cooling kit, which is a little pricey, but seems to do the job well. The scoops and hoses are the easy part -- mounting the hardware to the wheel hub requires drilling and the removal of everything down to the bearings.

For the air scoop (which I consider a temporary fix), I ran out to the 24-hour home depot, and got some sheet aluminum and threw it together. It's completely unprofessional looking, in my opinion, but it worked on the track.

jack,

cool! i saw that kit in AJ-usa and i was thinking of getting one but i didn't hear any feedback on people that had them in their cars.

also, Home Depot is the source for a LOT of race car parts. i bet the average Nascar fan doesn't realize that the oil and differential cooling hoses are sourced from an RV supply house in Tennessee. not to mention the gutter drains used as radiator screens.

good luck with your car, it looks fantastic!

Jack,

I think you should you should contact the folks at 'Excellence' to do a story on that beast you built. It seems like a far more interesting story than a beefed up 914 or Boxter(puke). Love to see it.
