86 930 fuel pumps start running

My 86 930 has begun to run the fuel pumps when I turn the key to the RUN position. I can swear it did not use to do this. It has also been draining the battery, which I thought I had licked after addressing a sticking door plunger. I went to use it today after taking off the battery tender( green light means fully charged, right)… had bright interior lights and the loud buzz when you first turn the key, but the pumps kicked on in the RUN, and when I went to the START key position it didn’t even try to bump the starter.

I checked the fuel cutoff plug on the CIS metering body and it is intact. Is there another way the fuel pumps could be told to go on, and might it represent a short that is also draining the battery between starts?

Have you done a current drain test on your battery yet? take an ammeter with at least a 10 amp rating, disconnect your negative battery cable. Connect the negative of the ammeter to the negative post of the battery, positive of the ammeter to the negative cable and read how many amps are being drawn from the battery with all accessories turned off (it helps to remove the fuse for the interior lights). It varies from car to car, but you definitely want less than 100 mA of draw.

You could have a bad cut-off switch, or if your Mixture adjustment plunger is stuck (depressing the sensor plate) will cause the fuel pumps to run.

I've needed an excuse for an ammeter and this is it I guess. I'll also take the air cleaner off and depress the sensor plate to see if that's it. I doubt it, though... I used the car just last week.
Some old related threads indict the relays melting and covering the pins. but (frustratingly) many of the original posters don't seem to have posted the final resolution of their issue.
