Is that the 3.5" thick one?
How was the fit? Good hardware? Do you think there is any way to get it under a carrera tail? I know I will have to cut the lid underneath. I have one ordered and was wondering what to expect. thanks, Ben |
yes... 3.5
if there was a way to push back the ic farther, then maybe. the problem is the ic intake from the turbo is a crappy line up. It ends up being a double bend and unless you do some good metrology and can weld up your own pipe, you're sorta stuck with best possible fit. It clears the 3.3 base wing by an inch or so |
That is what I thought. I figured I would move it forward into the engine bay for increased clearance in the rear. When I get it, I will see what I can do.
Maybe, MB911 can fab up something. |
jerry, I'm about to fit a GSF intercooler to my car as well, since I sold my existing IC and on-the-side turbo system. Your install looks good. Can you give me some idea of dimensions for that hard elbow going to the AFM? I'll need to get something like that fab'd too.
|
Ben can tell you what radius bend he made up.
but it's 2.5" pipe. And each leg is about three inches long. leave the IC side longer and you can cut it for a perfect fit. You could have Ben just send you one. Might be spendy. |
I like the idea of having a hard pipe as the elbow, instead of using a 90degree silicon elbow. Hard pipes minimises lag too ;)
I thought all GSF intercoolers had 3" inlet/outlets? Mine does! Is the GSF i/cooler core a bar & plate core? |
the gsf ic's are 3 inch we just use 2.5 inch as the AFM can not handle a 3 inch pipe real well. if you bought the GSF the 3 inch elbow should have been in the box as well?????
|
Yup, I got a 3" 90 degree tight radius silicone elbow with the i/cooler. I just need to source a AFM adapter with a 3" diameter inlet to suit. I'm hoping YermanCars posted his out to me last Friday as it's the only thing holding me up from installing the new IC.
I also ned to get a Davtron temp sensor welded to the outlet of the IC so I can monitor post IC temps. |
Well Here are a few more pics of my car w/the newly installed turbo. I definitely have the turbo smile....but I am a little hesitant to run it up to red line for fear of the boot blowing off again (already happened twice). I also finally got the LC-1/XD-1 working and the fuel pressure gauge to read.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1168952756.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1168952777.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1168952803.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1168952823.jpg
I won't be adding the IC until I get my new bumper, tail& lid and new front bumper as well. (So I can get it all painted together). Oh and I wanted to say thanks Jerry for adding that embarrassing photo of me installing the passenger seat on the driver side. |

If so, is your elbow transitioning from 3" to 2.5"? Or are you just using one of those 3" to 2.5" silicone reducers??? KCPSG, glad to hear you're enjoying the boost. If you want to stop the AFM boot blowing off, use some CT350SS clamps to hold it in place. It won't budge. OR, another solution which I've used in the past is to use a dremel tool to machine a barb/lip on the AFM, so when you clamp down the rubber boot, there's a ridge to stop it sliding off. This is the best solution IMO, but once you start running big boost (i.e: 1.0bar+), the boot will rip and you'll have to go with a silicone solution, or have a fabricator make you a aluminium/SS elbow with a nipple for the ICV/ISV vacuum tube. |
Thanks Merv.
I have already ordered an assortment of clamps that you mentioned earlier to stop the boot from blowing off. And I am also in the process of trying to fit a silicone 90* or an aluminum 90* on there. Thanks |
KCPSG, I currently run a silicone elbow, clamped down real tight with some CT350SS clamps and I've run it up to 1.4bar without any issue at all. You'll be fine at 0.5bar ;)

Hey Phil,
Is a an Intercooler necessary for running a low boost turbo? I noticed that you ran your car for a while without it. What is the difference with and without an intercooler? |
No the IC is not neccessary for low boost, however you can run just a little more boost w/the IC and I also find that my engine temps stay a little cooler now w/the IC. You can run up to .7 BAR w/the IC on stock internals...According to Protomotive I am presently running .6 BAR and loving it but also wanting more LOL
