Koni Struts-Identification HELP
Hi Guys,
I have a 1969 911E. It looks like the original funky struts were replaced with Koni's. Struts: Koni 9013410791 Left 9013410801 Right Inserts: Koni 86R 1647 86R 1638 1) What do I have? 2) Are these ok for my car? 3) How do you tell if the inserts are good or not? 4) How do you adjust a koni insert? Thanks ahead for your help. Warner ![]() |

Warner these are the same as I have on my "R alike". They are adjustable konis and are fine for your car. Condition should be easy to eastablish is the damper shaft scored or pitted? If so new inserts are needed. Is there any oil leakage round the damper shaft seal ? If so new inserts needed. Is the resistance to push and pull on the damper shaft consistent on both sides if not new inserts needed OR adjust ment.
To adjust compress the damper shaft fully in and rotate it . It will locate in a slot inside the shock body and move down approx 1/4 ich. Now hold it located and rotate clockwise untill it stops ( count the turns) this is max damping. Now rotate anticlock and count the turns untill it stops, this is min damping. Check both shocks feel the same at max and min. Then set damping preference the same on bioth sides and reassemble. Konis are as good as Bilstein IMHO. andy |

Koni's are great
Just did mine. FYI... I got Koni Specials from AJUSA $506 for all. If your's need to be replaced I found that Koni Sports won't fit into a Koni strut. My car is lowered so we cut the stops 1/3 (rear top ring only). I love em.
Best to have your favorite shop check the existing shocks for leaks and condition. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thanks Andy and Donny.
So no problem with a reinstall if the struts are good.... Is it common to find oil in the bottom of the struts or is oil added to prevent rust? Warner |

Not uncommon to find a "little" oil in the bottom of the housing. You'll notice a sucking sound as you draw the insert out. First sop out the old dirty oil innthe bottom. I just rolled some rolled paper around a large screwdriver and dredged them out. Get as much of the black stuff out as you can.
Be sure to have the shocks tested before you stick them back in.You want them to function properly and many Koni's have to be adjusted while out of the car.
