Thanks! That was a grand exhibition. If only I had bought one of those old trashed 904 race cars for my daily beater back in 1976 or so. But then I would have to have sold it when someone offered me 10x what I would have paid for it. This guy still drives them everyday?!?!?!?!?! I like his style.

the Paynes are really cool people. we see them twice a year when they come around up here. i have a stack of photos of their cars.

Henry (the III) and his son (Henry IV) sure do have some cool cars! i am going to put some sound files of the Carrera 6 up when i get a chance. it's a longtime favourite of mine.

Henry Payne Sr on the left
Henry Payne Jr in the blue in the middle
one of their mechanics towards the right talking to me.
me with my back to the camera.

i took this photo down from our wall and scanned it. we blew it up 8.5x11" because we were so amazed at how LOW the 907LH is. you never truly realize how small these cars are until you compare them to people.

jess took the photo, i believe i was saying:
"i bet right ~there~ (pointing to the induction right behind the driver's headrest) has to be one of the LOUDEST places on Earth"

the mechanic (i think his name was Jim) said:
"yeah, when they forget to put the earplugs in, they come back saying "huh?!? and what?!?" for the rest of the day."

if i get a chance i'll throw up the sounds of these enignes running, if there's any interest in it.

Great shot Obin. Low down! I think I can see Sammy Hagar in the distant background. You know he can't drive 55.

I've driven (and spun), with Henry, the pictured 904 around a racecourse that loops around his property in West Virginia. The track has some terrifying downhill (slightly off-camber) corners, and a nice skidpad. It was spectacular. The layout is modeled after a Porsche testing facility in Germany to exacting specifications.

What I respect most about Henry is that he really LOVES the plastic bodied cars, and his knowledge is encyclopedic. He is very frugal, and will spend 6 hours tearing apart an old 915 transmission to find small part that works in his racing box. He does it the hard way. I respect this approach much more than that of the "big money" guys who buy their way into (1) nice cars, and (2)being competitive on the track.
