SC Shifter Knob Removal
Ok, anyone knows how the SC top shifter knob comes off? It doesn't appear to screw off and can't see any set screws?
Thanks, Dan |

Pull it off. It is held on by friction. There is a crush sleeve between the knob and the shifter shaft. It can be quite hard to remove one. I usually do it with the shifter out of the car in a bench vise and I use a slotted block of wood, or the equivalent, and a hammer.

Thanks JR, seems like a part that easily damaged or cracked. The wood seems like a great idea.
Thanks again, Dan |

Spray some penetrating oil on the crush-sleeve from underneath.
Then use an adjustable wrench on the stick under the knob and tap with a hammer under the wrench. Some come off easier than others.

It's a beotch. I tried everything, the wrench underneath, piece of wood, etc, and after it began to chip I gave up and finally had to cut it off with a dremal. This of course destroyed it, but looking at the pieces it's just an ABS plastic POS anyway.

I always wondered about how to get access to the bottom of the knob on a mid-80's 915 with the shift boot that butts up against the bottom of the knob. What's the trick to one of them? How do you get the leather boot low enough on the shaft to get something underneath the knob to coax it upward?
