Is there a difference between US & ROW 911s?
Again I'm looking at an 84 Carrera. And looked up the vin. It had the triple "ZZZ" so I guess it's ROW version. Are there any differences in the ROW & US 911s i.e., performance, interior etc. I did notice that it never had the vin posted by the winshield was this normal for ROW cars? Thanks in advance.

Gonzo, yes there were differences between US
'84 3.2 Carreras & ROW versions. US cars had lower (9.5:1) compression ratio(as opposed to 10.3:1) & additional emissions equipment. This led to a reduced power/torque output when compared to ROW models plus a slight increase in overall weight. Power for US model was 207bhp compared to 231bhp for ROW (both at 5900rpm). Torque was 260Nm for US model compared to 284Nm for the ROW (both at 4800rpm). Overall weight was up by about 90Kg. As for the VIN number, I thought that all post-'69 models had the VIN on the windshield post. Andy (UK) '69 911E |

VIN numbers visisble in the windshield is a DOT requirement for all federalized vehicles! ROW cars didn't get that treatment from the factory in the mid eighties. It is currently a requirement for compliance for recently imported vehicles. There was a time when one could bring in one vehicle exempt from DOT and or EPA requirements. A few years ago the DOT told me that this is no longer the case.

My german spec 84 911 hasn't got the VIN in the windshield.
If the car you're looking at has the number 10 in the VIN it's a euro spec Coupe. If it has the number 12 it's a US spec Coupe. |

Bruce Anderson's book has intensive information on this subject in terms of what the differences were, and how to identify those ROW cars. You may want to check it out - "911 Performance Handbook".
