Can someone explain this engine bay pic to me?
What is the belt-driven accessory on the left? The car is supposedly an 80 SC, A/C delete. Also, what's the silver box up on the top that looks as if it's mounted to the engine lid?
Thanks and I look forward to the education. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1168795511.jpg |
Air pump, and rear window wiper motor cover.

Definately air injection pump for smog. I believe these started in '75 and I don't know when they were replaced with a better system. Perhaps not until the 3.2 in '84. Anyway, cars w/o cats had these.
|
Ok. I was gonna ask if it was smog pump, but I only thought that was through the mid-year cars.
So can I expect that this car has been run relatively hot for it's whole 80K lifespan? |
The PO of my '79SC removed the smog pump and harware and gave it to me in a box. He claimed the car ran better after removal... As far as I'm concerned, he saved me the trouble.
I don't believe the smog pump would increase engine temps appreciably... You may be thinking of the thermal reactors used on some of the mid-70's cars before the use of a cat. Eric |
yes, remove the air pump, as I did--gained a bit of power but I also replaced the cat with a bypass at the same time so I can't claim that for sure. if nothing else, it's one less belt to break off and cause havoc in a running engine.

Yes I was confusing smog pump with thermal reactors. I guess I always considered it as parts of te same zany system.
Thanks! |
