Hi all,
Would the lower valve covers from a 964 motor bolt right up to a 3.2 Carrera motor, which has been twin plugged? I assume the CAM towers are the same height between the two motors? Also, I need a left side lower valve cover, if anyone has one to sell?

They are not a straight bolt on, though I have tried and may try again.
The cam tower castings are the same but the studs for the valve covers are 6mm on the 964 vs 8mm for the earlier cars. I tried drilling out some 964 valve covers and that was not successful (they leaked IIR). I was thinking of replacing the cam carrier's 8mm studs with 6mm ones but I probably won't now. I was working on a friends '88 or '89 Carrera cab a few years back and I noticed that the casting number on the cam towers was a 964 #. That's what made me think about trying 964 lower valve covers on my twin plug motor. -Chris

Chris is right. The cam towers are the same except for the stud diameter. Either change the studs or drill out the holes. I have spare 964 covers and have been contemplating drilling them out for a trial.
Cheers

Merv, it is not necessary to get 964 valve covers. Any machine shop that is capable of drilling the second spark plug hole in a 911 head should be able to mill the plug holes in your standard lower valve covers, and fabricate clips to hold the lower plug wires in place.
Dont forget the chain box on the right side of the engine, there is a spot that needs to be relieved to make room for the #4 lower plug. Depending on the type of plugs you plan on using, you may also need to replace one of the lower head stud barrel nuts on each cylinder with a hex head nut from an air-cooled VW Bug. Tom |
