If the RS had thinner metal which contributed to the light weight, is this thinner metal available for restoration projects?

Thinner glass not thinner metal, not generally available.

The first run of 500 73RS's had thinner metal body work in some spots as well as the thinner Glaverbel (sp?) glass, but I have no idea if this is available...

Wouldn't most contemporary replicas use fiberglass/carbon fiber instead of "thinner metal"? Makes more sense to me.

My bad, but those were homolgation cars, w/ lots of little things that didn't appear on later series production cars.

Yes, but the original poster asked about restoration, so I guess if you have a first-run RS that needs body work, you'd want to keep it original...

Grant,

It was the first (approx.) 1000 cars actually had thinner sheet metal in a number of parts of the body.

No reproduction thin sheet metal parts being made that I know of.

There aren't any OEM Porsche thinner metal parts available, apart from the odd piece someone might have bought and squirreled away back in the day. You have to pay stupid money for these sorts of things, when they surface.

Porsche used up all the RS stuff on the assembly line. They bought a little more than what they needed for the homologation requirements and used it up on the cars as they built. When they ran out of the thin stuff, regular production pieces were used.

However, all is not lost. Some of the aftermarket sheet metal is of a thinner gauge; probably in an effort to make it cheaper. This can be used but be prepared to spend a lot of time making it work, as it isn't of the same quality. Or, you can do what the NASCAR and Trans Am guys did back in the day, and make your own, out of a standard part. Dip it in the right stuff and it gets thinner. Magic.

Cheers,
JR

Even 964RS and 993 RS parts are getting hard or impossible to obtain

Hi Bill:

I owned RS LW #91136001382 for awhile and it had all thin sheet metal, Glaverbel glass and the homolgated suspension changes.

Stupid me,........I wish I still had it.

download the *.doc file I compiled and check the table for what was thin and what was not on the RS, R, etc. (according to written sources).

http://www.penaltykicker.com/911/data/

Note also that the thinner Glaverbel glass didn't really save much wt. (Assuming the same density as regular glass).

Well there you go, Porsche is always full of surprises. This is certainly the latest chasis I have heard of with the thinner steel parts. Thanks for the input Steve.
