Well I started on a few tasks today (replacing trans and engine mounts, installing cat bypass). All was going well until I decided to try and fiure out why my muffler was always a bit low on one side. I thought (HA HA) that it would be as simple as tightening the straps. Not so lucky
![]() Anyway as you can see by the pic the muffler bracket was welded on. GOOD TIMEs! ![]() Question 1: How can I rig somthing up so the other side of the muffler will have some support? Question 2: Aren't there suppose to be some bolts somewhere around this bracket (the ones normally used to attach it to the case), if so how the hell am I going to get the enigine apart when the time comes? Are these bolt holes covered by the welded bracket? Question 3: Will I be able to buy this part of the motor (not the muffler bracket) during a rebuild so I won't have a bracket welded to my engine? Do any of you think someone bought the wrong bracket and rigged it by welding it . . .

The upper studs for the cradle are still accessible.
You can see the open hole in the upper left corner where your stud should be, and the other one is very short and only visible from the top , just to the right of the carnk pulley. So you won't have any problems removing the cradle from the engine when the time comes. In fact, theymade that easier for you by forgetting/neglecting to install one of them altogether. ![]() As far as the muffler bracket goes, I don't know what to tell you. You can either grind off the old bracket and start fresh, or weld on the missing half. Or just buy a new cradle, and swap them out. It can be done in the car if you support the engine with a jack, and remove the rear engine tin.

The engine was rebuilt several years back. Given the above I'm a bit concerned about what other shortcuts or just plain half ass techniques were used. I found the broken piece still in the muffler strap. It was well rusted. So I think it's been broken for several years.

No help but the PO messed mine up too. Check out the hole he hacked in the mount to turn the crank. What a dummy.

I think mine was done by the Previous Previous Owner. The PO would never have let this kind of hack job fly! I guess I'll start trying to round up a new muffler bracket and that whole end piece so I can replace them both next time the engine is out.

What exactly is that part called? Not the muffler bracket but the part it attaches to.

It's not the end of the world if you only have one strap supporting the muffler. I bought an '89 3.2 motor once that was missing the muffler bracket. There weren't any "tan lines" on the muffler so it had been that way for a while.

Tom:
Post a "Wanted" for both parts here. Should be cheap and easy to find. Hope that the bolts for the engine/transmission were not over-torqued and come out easy. Use antiseize grease when installing.

Since I'm in no rush for the parts I think I'll try to pick them up used via the classifieds. For now I used two open bolt holes and attached some metal strapping to them. Then I ran the muffler strap through that strap. It's on pretty darn good. Now for the test drive: New wevo engine mounts, new sport trans mounts (torque appropriately), and a new cat bypass pipe (more for valve adjustment headache reduction than HP).

I have an extra motor mount but it does not look like it has the muffler tabs on it. Is that a seperate part?
