Inertia Reel Question
Short Version: Does the intertial reel seat belt lock during both sudden deceleration and sudden acceleration?
Thanx really much for the help in getting the panels off and the seat belt mechanism out. Love these cars. The buckle on the post behind the user's window can be spun on the belt, so the visible hardware seems to be ambidextrous. But one end of the reel is just a little thicker than the other. the thicker end faces toward the front of the car. If I use a passenger belt, it will face toward the rear of the car. So, I am wondering if the interia mechanism will work properly. ------------------ '83 SC |

Yes, the later ones have a steel ball that senses motion in any direction. I learned this by trying to get my new belts to unreel and was un successfull until i turned it right side up and held it perfectly still. I assume this was an added safety item. I took the plastic side cover off the reel and that's when I saw the steel ball that acts on a lever that then touches a ratchet mechanism on the reel. I think it was a nice improvement over the older style that only locked from a sharp pull on the belt.

Well, that is my sense too. This thing seems to lock just the same whether I tip it forward (mimicking deceleration) or backward (mimicking acceleration). I'm afraid to take the plastic cover off but if the replacement I've found is suitable, there will be an autopsy on the old one.
It seems they are ambidextrous even though there is a left and a right, at least in the catalogue. We'll see. thanx! ------------------ '83 SC |

While there are still aspects of 911 seat belts I find mysterious, it seems true they can be interchanged, left to right. FYI.
