911 Speakers/Sub

Looking to outfit a 964 with decent sound. The problem is that I haven't bought the car yet and I'm new to 911s. Obviously not the space of normal cars so a few questions:
1) Any old threads you kind folk could point me to?
2) What size speakers will fit in the car and where? What would you suggest for some decent range (i.e., bottom end, especially in the front doors)? I would be willing to pay $600 for speakers all around but happy to do for less.
3) Is my only choice for sub placement right on the floor behind front seats? I am used to a single 10" but in the cabin, maybe a sealed 8" would be okay. Can you put a sub in the front trunk and get any bass response? Is there any space behind back seats?

Can't wait to do that embarrasingly silly flash to other 911 owners.

I replaced the back seat in my 951 with two 12" speakers. (That I never listen to because I love the sound of the engine more...) I'd imagine you could do the same thing.

What the heck is Glen's handle here? Island911? He had an install done locally here in Seattle that was quality. I think they ended up putting speaker boxes on the floor behind the seats.

Single 8" sub in a sealed box. Great sound and plenty of power (unless you're into rattling windows).

You need to check out Rod Birch's "system" for 911 models.
Rod did a complete "system" w/ subs in my 911SC about 6 years ago. Still sounds great, incredible quality & attention to detail.

Rod Birch/Caraudioinnovations is (or at least was) very, very well known on the Rennlist email list years ago. Lots and lots of people swore by his systems. He could do local work or send you all of the stuff.

I faced the same issue in my '85 Targa. Being somewhat of an audiophile I wanted crisp clean sound in my car. This applies to my car so I'm not sure of the room in the doors and passenger front floor in a 964. But this is what I did.

Ultimately I installed a set of Dynaudio 340 seperates in the doors: 6-3/4" mid subs / 4" mids and 1-1/2" tweets. I also used standard dynamat to completely cover the inside door skin (under the door panel) to sound-proof the door and esssentialy turn it into a big speaker cabinet.

I installed the adjustable crossovers for the front door speakers in behind the footwell blowers so I can adjust the sound after I'm done. My car has A/C

As for the subwoofer, I Followed the best solution for these cars I've ever seen. Someone else here already figured this out but I can not remember his ID. Do a search here for subwoofers he had posted pics of his install. I just copied it!

I took the pass false floor out and behind that is the main blower resistor. I removed the resistor from the large plastic holder and then mounted it to a very small piece of wood. By doing this I could now mount it inside the air duct

There was enough room in that area to relocate the resistor up inside the duct. By doing this it frees up critical space behind the pass false floor area. I covered the surrounding area behind the false floor with dynamat to insulate.

I used a Dynaudio 10' subwoofer and mounted it to the backside of the passenger wooden false floor. So when the floor is reinstalled the sub is firing directly at you.

Prior to mounting I drilled 1" holes in a standard pattern on the floor board. The floor board was just large enough to center and mount the sub. I did have to "clearence" the firewall area just outside of where the resistor originally mounted so the rear of the sub would not interfere.

This does take some work but anyone can do it with some patience and time. I did remove the rear speakers and replace the deck cover.

This way the complete sound stage is all in front and sides of you like you would see a live performance or concert.

Since very low bass is non-directional it does not matter that the subwoofer is not quit centered in the car. The sub is covered with the factory carpet so it's invisible. The door speakers are in the original location so all looks as it should have come that way.

I believe you are talking about my system from my 964. Glen does not have a system in his car. I had two 8" woofers behind the seat, two 6" mids and two tweaters in the doors, pushed by 400 watts. Woofs and amp were Rockford Fosgate and the mids and highs were MB Quart (which are no longer sold in the States, I understand). I pulled everything when I totaled my car, so I still have the whole system....I am likely selling the system soon.

I have a Nakamichi system that the P.O had installed in my car that I took
out and am going to list for sale. No need for a stereo in my 911 anymore. Nakamichi deck, 6 speakers, crossovers, Orion amp, very nice system,

I put a stereo in my 964 and the sound is poor despite my willingness to spend money. That said, a sub seems essential.

I totally forgot about this post and just came back to find your thoughts. Best news is that I ended up buying a 993 instead so I'll get to outfit that with a stereo now. I pick it up tomorrow - can't wait! Unfortunately, it has a really corny low end Sony head unit in it now with nothing special for speakers - so I'll have to put your advice to use...
