Can not go to 4th or 5th gear

Hello,

please help, I have took the car out of the body shop were it has been for about 2 years.

The car can not go into 4th or 5th gear, what may be the problem?

forgot to tell you that is a 1969 2.0 911S. The gearbox is the early style with the 1st. just left under the rear gear.

Just a guess - sounds like the shift rod can't engage the 4th-5th gear shift fork. Do the 901s have a bottom access cover to inspect this area like the 915s? If they are similar, you should be able to pop the access cover off and see the shifting mechanism.

Hello,

I have to check if it has this cover, if so, should I drain the fluid before or can take it off directly?

i don't know much about the 901 style trans but in any other situation i would say that the shifter linkeage sounds to be out of adjustment and could be re-aligned to engage all of the gears properly. this is accessed via the pannel behind the front seats on the top of the tunnel. there is a tech article about it for the 915 on here and i'm sure the procedure has been covered if you look for 901 shift linkage adjustment.

Before you go opening the transmission (and all your fluid will come out if you open the shift-fork access plate on the trans) check your shift-coupler.

This coupler is located under the carpet at the rear of the tunnel. It's unlikely that something happened inside the trans while he car was sitting. However if the engine was out or this coupler moved, it could very well be mis-aligned. Do a search on shift coupler alignment on Pelican and you'll see how to do it.
