Adding Front back flares...care to explain how?
Actually, I'm just curious as to what the steel flares you buy are. You weld them on? If someone could briefly explain the process. I imagine cutting the old ones off somehow (where?), and welding the new ones on? This seems like something only a professional body shop should do, but homemechanics seem to be doing it themselves.

I've got a blow-by-blow pictorial of it on my site:
![]() By the way: if I had my flares to do over, I would make sure they were butt welded with a mig or wire welder. Mine look great, with no hairline cracks so far, but they weren't done in the best way possible. Also, check out the current thread: http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum3/HTML/003875.html ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T sunroof coupe [This message has been edited by JackOlsen (edited 11-13-2000).] |

Kurt
I made a run out there on Friday, actually. But I was in my black Jaguar. I'd sent the 911 through one of those hand car wash places, and the track that pulls the car through yanked off my front left brake cooling duct and stripped one of the mounting bolts on my rear sway bar... ...all the day before Saturday, when I was planning on being out at Willow Springs, doing this: ![]() The guys at Performance were great, getting me just the parts that had been affected -- for less than the cost of the carwash! ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T sunroof coupe |

Kurt, I to own a 84 carrera but coupe version. I just spent the weekend installing rear turbo flares, front next weekend! I got the flares from Mashaw and they fit beautifully. Just simply lay them over original fender get it clamped in place then scribe original fender. Remove and cut, I used an elecric cut off wheel with small discs. Then as Jack said butt weld them together with a mig. This is were it gets tricky because you have to really move from one side to other to keep heat down. The flares look awesome but now I need to buy another set of wheels because I want the wider tires the 255's just wont cut it! Matt

Hey Jack
I have been impressed by your car and given me aspirations for my car...but machine wash?? Not to criticize, but I enjoy a lazt sunday afternoon washing my car by hand...no swirl marks...and no liquid wax BS...get to polish my wheels...fix things up just the way I like...real wax... hmmm...maybe after the 100th hand wash I will get tired of it...but for now...it is good quiet time with my SC |

I know, I know. It won't happen again. I was out of time, and wanted the metal a little cleaner since I was going to be putting the bra on it. Also, it wasn't a mechanical wash, just a track that pulls it through while it gets sprayed while guys wash it by hand. Still: never again. ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T sunroof coupe |

Hah. Well, I'd have to pay to have it done. My mig welds look like rat droppings...this from trying to weld in a new battery tray on my 914.
I suppose cutting wouldn't be too bad. What are you going to do about repainting the area? Sure, it might be a good time to repain the whole car, but I'm not up for that...too big a committment. What kinds of estimates can one expect to spray the flares and blend them into the (slightly faded) but original paint? ------------------ Kurt B 1984 911 Carrera Cabriolet 75 914 1.8 |
