My New Carrera towed home

Drove my new 85 Targa over to the inlaws tonight and it would not restart when I went to leave. This is my first 911 and I don't know much about it yet. After AAA dropped it off in my garage it fired right up and ran for a minute, then died and will not start. Picked up car this morning and put about 100 miles on it. Passed a ppi this weekend and I have every maint. record since 1988. I suspect the DME relay since this has got me in my old 944. Is it located under the seat by the DME?

Nice car, nice color. Sorry I can't be of help, but where in FLA are you located?

Sorry to hear it. The dme relay is under the seat. Check the battery connections and make sure the ground is making good contact. If the starter has been replaced with one of the new high torque smaller units, they have a spade connector on them that sometimes comes loose.

Congratulations on the purchase of your '85. It sounds like the DME off hand. I used to take care of an '86 Targa for a friend and it had the same exact problem. I replaced the DME after confirming its lack of operation via voltage check on the fuel pump and DME itself.

Good Luck

Be sure to check the fuel filter. The fact that it restarted and ran momentarily leads me to believe the filter is getting clogged?

Cool color and welcome!

More to your point would be the fuel pump. That would be the more likely cause of intermittant operation than a filter. But i'm not saying a clogged filter wouldn't cause it to run poorly. A clogged filter would likely shut things down altogether. Saw it happen to Souk from a tank of bad gas he got from a Citgo station in South Haven, MI near Gingerman Raceway.

But yes, check the DME relay with a new replacement. Also things to consider are the cyl head temp sensor and the DME reference sensors underneath the car that read the flywheel and clutch housing. The sheathing around the wiring on the reference sensors gets cooked by the exhaust system and then the wire braids themselves get corroded. The result is an intermittant start or running condition. A friend just recently had this happen on his '88 engine.

I have read many post regarding electrical prroblems and not many recommend to check the fuses first. I had a problem with my fuel pump and it were dirty connectors in the fuse box. Check the connectors in the fuse box first.

I'm back on the road. Replaced the DME relay this morning and the car started right up. Thanks everyone for your responses. I have been lurking here for about a year, this board is what convinced me to get a Carrera instead of a 996

The car looks great outdoors! The real color really comes out. The DME relay issue bites again. I think it's happened to just about all of us here who own 3.2 Carrera's.

It's white gold metallic, the seats were full brown leather but have been recovered in vinyl.
