Rear Speaker shelf 911
Anyone set up a rear speaker shelf in their 911?
What's the deal with sound quality and comprimises etc.. what speakers will fit? Is there anyone who builds speaker shelves ready made?

Hey Matty!
I just installed a used stock speaker shelf out of a newer SC in my '74 911. ![]() I reupholstered it in black vinyl to match the RSR style door panels I added. The speakers are 4" x 6" and about 2" deep. They are matched to the pair I added to a "Moch-1" under dash speaker mount and sound great with 35 watts per channel. ![]() AppBiz builds reproductions of the stock rear deck if you're interested in buying new: http://www.appbiz.com/index.php?cPath=25&osCsid=a393a5cd94b368c067c77d4a0180c589 Last edited by DarrylD; 11-19-2006 at 08:52 PM.. |

that does look cool, out of an SC, how much space does it give you (depth) I'm thinking of going 6X9 speakers in the rear

Hey Matty!
6x9 are too thick, the stock rear deck only gives you about 2" depth. Go to a good car stereo shop and listen to the smaller speakers, you'll be surprised by how good 4x6 ones sound in such a small confined space. |

Stock setup is for 4x6's. You can't even fit deep ones. Nothing really sounds very good back there. Most people go with a good quality door speaker. I have seen some put shallow woofers under the passenger seat.
You could probably build a box in the back, but I have never seen it done. Maybe it is a litte too "pimp my ride" for 911 owners. Good luck.

yeah I guess 4x6 it is have you guys know focal speakers I was going to put in a set of 4 6 inch splits powered by an alpine V12 amp.
I'll have to check if I can fit those on the rear shelf maybe a spacer might do the trick to buy an extra inch but as cytoad said 911 don't really need pimping

Forget rear deck speakers, there is nothing out there that will sound decent in that shallow area. Your front speakers will simply out shine the rear deck speakers by a long shot. I spent the money and tried but it was a waste. The volume available below that crappy fiberboard deck is totally inadequate for producing good sound. Secondly, the other problem is the fiber board, totally wrong for mounting speakers unless you avoid base. Better-off going to subwoofer, third channel for the rear, mounted under a seat or on the floor.

For optimal sound, you want your mids and highs to be coming at you from in front - like a concert. Bass can come from anywhere seeing that it's not directional - but most convenient in the rear.
The only time you'd want rear speakers are for passengers and at lower volumes. How many times will you have a passenger (or two) in the back with the music blaring in a 911? Just my $.02. |

For real, full sound I wouldn't go for anything less that a single 10". You'll probably have to loose your rear seats and build a custom enclosure that fires upwards. I've never done it but you should be able to find some examples searching under the 911 tech forum.

Is there an enclosed sub woofer I could put under the seat that any one knows of rather than removing seats

You could always go with something like this to keep your rear seats.

If you're going to build it yourself just know that this should be a sealed enclosure and not just a panel that bolts to the floor - which wouldn't work well due to it needing to seal completely.

In my '85 I have fitted Infinity 4X6 speakers in the rear deck. It did take a little bit of cutting with a dremel tool to make them fit. They sound nice.
That 'enclosure' is really a panel that when mounted creates a sealed enclosure with the rest of the interior. It is stated on their web page and I own one for the '87. http://www.caraudioinnovations.com/porsche8384sub.htm As for door speakers in the '85, again I had to cut, but I managed to get Infinity 6X9 speakers in there behind the pocket. I ran all this with a 4 channel Infinity amp. Sounds amazing!

If you want to go truly high end, I'd use 6.5" component (seperate tweeter and midrange with a crossover) speakers in the doors.

I made a platform to replace the seatbacks. It sits at the same height as the folded seatbacks previously did and rests on the floor. Gives me a large place for packages (or a full golf bag with pull cart
) and I installed all the wiring so I can pull the entire thing out in about 5 minutes if needed. The speakers are 6.5" but could go up to 10" if desired.

I just redid my deck. I used 6" round pioneer speakers and they work well. The old ones were a 3 or 4" combined with a tweeter in a square sort of unit that actually raised the speaker about 3/4" off the deck leaving almost nothing sticking under. This would be good for fitting bigger speakers but then youd have 2 unsightly boxes sticking up

Looks good, sound not so good. Pioneer 6x9 3 way powered by a Jensen 200 watt amp. If you want bass that's not the place you'll get it. My next move is to do a sub box with maybe one 10" woofer behind the seats powered by the amp I'm using now. Those 6x9's are resting on a piece of 1/2" plywood so the magnets don't rest on the engine firewall.

I agree that the sound should be comming from the front of the car. But just to have a bit better rear fill has anyone tried the Rear deck conversion made by original fit interior? They advertise in Pano often (nov 06 page 83)
