Koni Struts

I have a ’74 911 with Koni front struts, model 8641-1039. The car is lowered and used primarily on the track. The lowering has caused the shocks to bottom-out, thus rendering them un-adjustable and under performing.

My Koni’s are the externally adjustable version that appears to be a shorter insert with a (almost) 1 inch spacer on the bottom. I am considering cutting off that spacer and cutting the same width (almost 1 inch) off the top of the strut, effectively lowering the strut almost an inch. Obviously, I will have to extend the threads inside the strut to secure the insert.

This should enable me to "raise" the car, but keep the same relative height since the strut is now lower. This should allow the insert to maintain a more extended position; therefore, improving the rebound action and preventing the bottoming.

Anybody done this? Does it sound workable? Any other suggestions?

JT,

I don't really understand what shortening the strut would do to improve your current 'unadjustable and underperforming' struts!
The factory RSR cars achieved lowering and full strut operating range by raising the stub axles on the strut housing ... that sounds easier to accomplish than what you proposed. Grinding away the factory welds, slide the axles up by an inch or so, and rewelding ... is all that would be needed ... with the inserts out, of course!

Thanks Warren,

Your suggestion was my first choice, but two different mechanics have told me you can't raise the stub axles on a Koni strut.
