DE question - cab broomstick check?
Hello all. Been away a bit. I noticed our local PCA club (Mid-South Region) is having a DE at the end of April. The hitch is, I have a cab (83). Right now, my car is basically stock other than rebuilt top end with some upgrades, turbo tie rod ends, and other small misc. I do NOT have a roll bar. Our Mid-South Region website said that the cab drivers had to have a roll bar and pass a "broomstick" check? This would be my first DE. Can one of you veterans clue me in on this broomstick thing, or point me to a link where I can read the right info.
Thanks, Dazed and Confused ![]() |

As far as I know the broomstick test is used for Boxsters, I guess you could do the same thing on a cab with a roll bar. Basically you put a broomstick from the windshield to the roll bar (on top of both), the top of your helmet must be a certain distance below that. I think it's two inches. I don't see how you could do the test without a roll bar though.

That makes sense about the broomstick check, but makes me wonder. I am not that tall, 6'1". But with a helmet?? My car again, is an 83 cab. Anyone out there that can tell me what roll bars would work for my car and height? Is it possible to have all of this and still be able to use my top with the roll bar still installed? Thanks,Shane |

11. All open cars, including cabriolets and Boxsters, must have a visible, approved roll bar which
conforms to the following: With the occupant(s) (student and instructor, if applicable) firmly and correctly belted into the vehicle, the occupant(s) helmet must be below a straight line drawn between the top of the windshield and the top of the roll bar (clearance in a “Broomstick Test”). It is further recommended that roll bar be padded in any area that may come in contact with the occupant(s) helmet. Participation of open cars requiring instructors will be limited at each event based on the number of volunteer instructors who pass the “Broomstick Test”. This was extracted from a PCA track guide published by Ct Valley Region |
