Son and Father engine drop

Finally getting around to posting about my engine drop, 2 weekends ago.
I had been trying to solve a clutch related problem. Couldn't get the clutch to move enough to get in gear.
I covered all the ground before pulling the engine.
Rebuilt the pedal cluster, replaced the clutch cable, new bushings etc in the omega spring. Still no help.
Time to pull the engine. As most people have stated this was really no problem, thanks to Wayne's 101 projects
and past experience on this board.
My first Porsche engine drop, took about 5 hours spread
over 2 days, simply took my time in disconnecting everything.

Its amazing what damage you can do with a few hand tools.

I had the help of my long time chief mechanic, my father, dad will be 80 next month.
We did our first (VW) engine drop together in 1972, built a dune buggy together etc. Lots of projects since then.

After getting it all apart the culprit was discovered, as had been suggested my throwout fork was not in the best of shape.
Broken;

and not quite as straight as it came from the factory;

After ordering a few parts, including a new clutch. I'll be getting this back together soon.

Jay

My complements to you and your father!!!! A garage engine drop is a difficult job for a mechanic in his 20s. Your dad looks great @ 80 my hat's off to him

BIG Kudos. Count me among the misty eyed. If my Dad were still alive he'd be under there with me. Dad would be 84 if he were still around. Enjoy your father every chance you can.

Very cool, way to go. Although I think we may be a generation apart (give or take) my 4.5 year old can't wait to help daddy put the 3.4 back in the "race car".

That is cool stuff!

Cheers

We had a great time, my dad is looking forward to getting it all back together (so am I).
And it was really a 3 generation project, my 16 year old son was some help He took the photo of me in the engine compartment.

My dad came out here last January and overhauled the engine for my bother's 944 in my garage... all he did the whole time is grumble about how much he hated that car... Dave and my dad now both own BWM Z3's.

I just want to point something out......your hands look clean and your shirt doesn't have a spot on it. On the other hand, your dad's hands, pants, and sweatshirt are dirty. Seriously though, looks like you had a great time.....very similar to one of my sons and myself.....right down to me ending up greasier than him.

Steve,

Good eye, me in the engine comparment was "staged" after I cleaned up. I swear I was the dirtiest of the two. Thats right, my wife "Morgan Fairchild" will support me on that

the nice thing about having brothers is that, when hard at work on a car project, they act a lot like your dad, but you don't!!

A month later an update. Finally engine is back in the car.
Friday got started on putting things back together, adjusted the valves, that was hard enough doing with the engine out. Still trying to figure how I'll every do it with the engine in.
Only real difficulty was getting the trans mount bolted up, on bolt just would not catch on the threads, took the file to it and fixed that.
Fired up just perfectly on first key turn. What a difference the new clutch makes, pretty much every thing is rebuilt from pedal cluster to the clutch. Can't wait to do some serious driving.

Oh, the speedometer is not working, I think I don't have the sensor pressed into position completely.

I love it, I'm expecting my first child and I too hope to one day carry on a project like this.

Nice!
