Market Labor Rate ?
Car's at a new shop as we speak due to a breakdown and I hope I misread their posted labor rate. My usual guy charges $78/hr and the posted rate I saw was over twice that (surely I need to get my glasses checked).
I don't have a problem paying a fair rate for good service....just don't think I should have to break out the Lubro Moly! What is the hourly range out there for independents? Thanks!

Three shops in the West LA area I went to charge $90-$95 per hour. The shop I go to charges $105, but I feel more confident that things will get taken care of better.

Tab, can I have your permission to use that? Absolutely great.
Reminds me about the joke about the what pizza and sex have in common.....when it good it's really good and when it's bad, it's still pretty good! BTW how may hours labor does the "book" say on a slave cyl replacement with a system bleed? Thanks!

Thanks all. Pretty interesting to see labor rates across the country. New shop came in at $88/hr...2 hrs total for the slave replacement. On a related note, I was forced to stop at the local dealer a couple of months ago when fellow motorist flagged be down at a stop light in the rain to tell me I had no brake lights. Needed both brake light switches replaced on the master cylinder.....$106/hr at the dealer. $88/hr feels good!!!!!!!!!!!

I think 70-85 per hour is about the norm in this line of work

Mechanical labor rates vary widely within the metro Atlanta area. Body repair and refinishing rates are closer together because of the insurance industy being involved in collision repairs....body shops tend to want to be competitive in those areas as a majority of their income is based on being paid by insurance companies....mechanical shops do not deal with insurance companies on a regular basis and do not rely on that income on a daily basis....therefore mechanical labor rates are basically open to whatever the shop feels they want to charge....and since you drive a Porsche and want them to work on it...they feel they can charge you more....even though the tech performing your work may have just started working at that shop and been working on Fords or Chevys last week.....just food for thought....
