Question 3.2 Carrera: Measuring Fuel Pressure?

Guys,

Sorry for the dumb question, but is there a standard diagnostic port available for tapping in a fuel pressure guage on the 3.2 Carrera fuel system?

Where is it?

Need to verify I'm seeing appropriate fuel pressure at idle to diagnose this low idle/stalling problem

Thanks Cgarr. Is a "special Porsche" fitting required, or any standard type fuel pressure guage will fit?

My CIS fuel pressure tester fits it. I don't think it even needs an adapter.

If I'm thinking of the same port there is a cap that unscrews at the end of the rail. Be careful as there's a ball bearing in there to seal. It'll fall out when the cap come off. It appears to be a standard metric thread but I'm not sure of size. Wait....let me go to the garage.......here.....

M12X1.5 It's not the same as the fuel line fittings, even though the cap looks the same size.
89 911 ran a hose for the fuel tap to the fuel presure gauge.

Great info! Thanks

Is it a Male 14 x 1.5mm fitting?

I'm told fuel pressure should read ~2.5bar (with vacuum on FPR connected) and ~2.8bar with vacuum line disconnected?

EDIT: Oh, thanks Jp!

Nice having the gauge there all the time. Might have to look at this mod.

Yeh I like the idea of having that guage there permanently.

Can you just confirm whether I should be buying a 1/8" NPT gauge or 1/4"? My local auto shop has both, in stock.

I can't remember for sure if I mated it up but when I replaced the fuel lines I took this test fitting off and it seemed like the standard fuel hose fit it. That would be a spherical metal end held in place with a nut like fitting.

I don't think a pipe thread would fit.

re: male fitting.... ???

just to be clear...the part "on the car" is a male fitting...and the "gauge part" ( replacing the "cap" that hold the ball bearing in-place) is female....correct ???

This sex stuff is confusing to me (and I'm 52), but the part on the hose that goes to the Gage would be convex (maybe male) and the part on the rail the ball goes into is concave (female).

Now if you look at the threads the internal threaded part is attached to the hose to the Gage and the external threads (male) are on the fuel rail.

Why can't one just screw in a mini fuel pressure guage directly onto the test port on the fuel rail (i.e: no hose)?

Is it a 1/8" fitting? The brass fitting on the guage I just bought is a 1/8" NPT. I'm hoping this will just screw into the port on the fuel rail

Merv:
It's a 1/8 NPT male for the gauge; the issue is finding a conversion fitting that has 1/8 NPT female with a 12X1.5 convex female fitting at the other side.
I had one guy send me this fitting, but unfortunately it seems to be a custom part. The fitting is straight, from which I installed a 1/8 NPT elbow to the back of the gauge.

I had my garage put one on when I was running a MAF that was tempermental with fuel pressures. It's an easy addition, just use some high pressure fuel line (stainless cable looks nicer) and use the proper connections. Make sure you use a glycerine filled gauge also to dampen the vibration. Originally I had a non filled VDO guage that failed quickly. You'll also want a fuel pressure regulator to make the adjustments.

I just screwed a pressure tester to the test port and called it a day. I decided to leave it on there and have had no problems. I think I had a machine shop make one fitting for me. The car is in storage for the winter but I might have pictures at home on my pc. It is avery nice addition to have when troubleshooting etc..

The one I mounted to my car didn't have the oil/liquid filled display and over time, vibration killed my gauge

I'm going to fit a new one on soon as it is a great diagnostic tool to have and can remain in place permanently
