Correct Finish for the Backside of Fuchs?
 

I searched and searched but couldn't find any solid information on the correct finish for the inside of my Fuchs. They are 15x7s and 8s on a 1970 T. I remember seeing a post about some Fuchs having gray barrels and later Fuchs having satin black barrels. Which would be correct for a set of early 70s Fuchs.

Eventually I'm thinking about using the Scotch-Brite method on the lips and petals. Currently the wheels have a so-so refinish using a semi-gloss black for the centers and polished lips.

This car has a similar look I'd like. I know it has an anodized or frosted finish on the wheels, not scotch-brite...

When they put the black paint on these wheels they literally dipped them in the paint. The lip on the back is black and the inside is black.

As far as the color of the black? I'm not sure exactly but most people going for the original look use the Wurth paint.

Thank you for the reply and the compliment! I really like the color as well but I'm not sure what it is. The car had a windows out bare metal repaint in the late 80s, the flares were added at that time. I was only told that the color was called mink grey but I am going to get some paint matched at the paint store for touch up.

I will go ahead with the black barrels for the wheels. The inside of the wheels have some serious brake dust that needs to be taken off.

Note that the contact surfaces to the hub/brake rotor and
the lug nuts are not painted.

Oh wow, thanks for the pictures Grady. The paint scheme makes a lot more sense now. Since I don't have a barrel of paint it looks like I'm in for quite a bit of masking.

Are the anodized petals considered an OEM finish for an early car? The black petals must be something that came along with the SC or Turbo?

mine are done up in "brake dust black"

spraying is fine - factory did it later on & used by all aftermarket refinishers AFAIK

observe the unpainted areas carefully in Grady's pics - paint in the lug nut concavity or the hub mating surface will be a problem.

3M vinyl electrical tape is great for masking the petals. It has enough stretch ability to get around the complex curves.

You will want to prime with a self etching primer. Make sure the areas to be painted are extra super clean or you will have problems with the paint sticking.

"Sir" Grady does it again! Maybe he should be knighted. Those pictures tell the whole story. Now I need to go to my storage spot, pull all four wheels, sand and smooth for hours and finally dip the buggers in a barrel of Wurths.
