Engine sound....not sure if its a problem
Guys, I need a bit of advice. I have never really understood the sound a 911 motor is reputed to make when the head studs are pulled. Although my car runs well, ever since I rebuilt it, it sounds as if there's an exhaust leak at idle. Before and after I rebuilt it, the cars sound would change at about 4300 rpm to a course 'bark'. I have heard of people talk about the dreaded ' barking dog' sound indicitive of pulled head studs, and wondered if anyone could elaborate on this. During the rebuild, i reused the old studs and all took full torque without bother. I know most other 911's kind of change note at 4krpm and up as they come on cam but mine sounds extremely 'raucaus' between 4-5krpm. Hey, if this is how they sound then great! I'm not complaining, just a bit paranoid that something else is up. It's been so long since I've heard anyone elses 3.2 that its hard for me to do a 'mental' comparison. I guess I will check the studs at the next valve adjustment.

hmmm...i have a similar problem, around 4000 only in 3rd and 4th gear there is a rattly sound...I was thinking a broken valve spring, but it is only in 3rd and 4th, not in neutral...wonder if it is a similar problem...by the way what is bump steer?
I just lowered my 82SC at Johnson's (Steve) in torrance...handles great but we did not put in the spacers...I am not sure wha tI am supposed to look for with bump steer.... thanks MJ |

If your steering wheel jerks a little left and right while going over a bump then you have bump steer. A lowered car results in tie rod angularity between the steering rack and the front wheel hubs. This can be easily fixed with the spacers.
