				83 SC Shifter Play

I know there is a good deal of discussion on 915 shifter "play". I've had an '84 with the 915 trans so I don't expect it to shift like a Honda. But the '83 I just bought does seem to have excessive lateral (left to right) play in the shifter and is notchy going into 2nd. I had 2nd gear synchro go bad in my other 911 and dont think (hope) that is the problem.

I have what appears to be complete and extensive service records for the car and do not see any record of replacing any shifter components. Car has 134k miles. What are the recommendations for type of shift coupler (OEM, Wevo, Stromski) and bushings that should probably be done by 134k miles? Any recommendations on troubleshooting, or should I do the updates and see how everything lines up after that? Thanks.

For me, step one would be to replace all of the shift bushings. The cup under the lever, the ring bushing that is vertical at the rear of the shift housing and the bushings on the OEM coupler. See how that goes and then decide what parts you might want to upgrade.

I just did the front portion on my '85. At 175K miles the cup was in sad shape. I have not done the rear coupler yet.

Getting the console out to access the shifter was a challenge on mine. One screw on each side in front under cover panels, one rear under carpet. Disconnect fader, remover screw plates on the A/C and fan control. Also, I believe the cone screw on the cup is 4mm hex. My wrench has a tip ~20mm long, get one ~10-15mm. |

There are solid rear bushings (bronze?) and softer (rubber/urethane?) I would guess the solid are preferable?

Replace all four bushings, AND remove, clean, shim, and repack the 915 shifter until no play inside shifter itself ... BTW, the factory service manual NOW recommends a good EP moly grease be used inside the shifter ... NOT the plain lithium grease once used at the factory!!!
