Lessons from my 3.2 conversion

I just completed installing a 1987 carrera engine in my '73 coupe this weekend. I relied heavily on information I found here, but ended up being surprised by a few things that I wish I had known. I am posting them here for others who may be doing similar conversions later.

1) You do not need an O2 sensor to run a 3.2. My mechanic says these engines actually run better without them. Mine is running fine without it. Not installing one eliminates the need to drill your exhaust, weld in an O2 bung, etc.

2) You do not need the sensor that attaches at the top of the transmission. It is for diagnostics but rarely used. Leaving it out allows you make one less notch in the bell housing. I ended up installing the passenger's side engine tin on the back of the motor from the '73 instead of the tin from the '87 (which has the gap for this sensor). You can take the senor out all together.

3) You can eliminate almost all of the vacuum hoses from the driver's side rear of the engine. These are all for the break booster system.

4) I would have powder coated the plate over the shift coupler when I powder coated my engine tin, but didn't think about it until it was too late. I had to pay a minimum fee anyway, so there would have been no extra charge.

5) Marc's conversion page is super helpful, but the 16-pin extension he does is totally unnecessary. Look instead for E. Sully's posts about how to modify the wiring. Super easy to follow, results in a nice clean engine compartment, works like a charm.

6) Contact Len Cummings to make fuel lines for you. I relocated the fuel pump to the front cross member and he very patiently helped me work out what lines were needed and built them for me (along with lines for the engine). Again, a neat solution that works perfectly.

I'm sure there are others. I will post any big ones that I think about. Thanks to E. Sully, Len Cummings, Steve Weiner (Steve--I'll stop by when I'm back in the neighborhood to let you see it someone), and others who helped out with various pieces of this project. Nice to be done!

I have a very early 84 carrera 3.2 row model manufactured in september 83 and it does not run an o2 sensor at all.
