RS door panels

I am playing with the idea of installing RSA door panels in my '73 911. AppBiz and Pelican say they come with door opener strap and tools to make the connection behind the panel.

Is any thing else needed? Will the stock window cranks work with the panels?

Don't know about a 73 but for my 82 I needed some washers to act as spacers so that the plastic covers for the ends of the door handle would latch in place. Otherwise, when you tighten the screws to attach the door handles there isn't enough space between the handle and the door panel for the cover to catch.

Not a 1973 either...

My kit came with washers for that. 12 in total. Need at least three under each bolt on the door handle.

The panels have pre-cut areas that you use depending on electrical or manual operation. So they work with either setup.

Wachuko,

Do you have power windows? I noticed the small finger knob above the pull handle.

Can standard window cranks work with the RSA Panels? or the '73 RS panels?

Yes. What you have is a cut out in the back. You need to cut the vinyl or leather and staple the flaps in the back for the whole that would be used for the manual crank.

The panels I ordered for the '83 came in with wood panels, the one in the 964 were some sort of plastic/foam density board.

Here is a photo to show what I am talking about... the cut out is already made and if you do not need that hole you just leave the vinyl alone in that area...

You can see the manual crank hole in the photo that shows the cuts in the vinyl for the electrical switches.

RS America door panels for early car

Bob at APPBIZ here, first of all the wood panels shown in the above post were not manufactured by us. We never ever use wood for our door panels. Ours are precison die cut from water resistant panelboard, this is a material specifically manufactured for door panels, we also add a sound deadening material to the backside.

The RS America panels we sell for 1965 to 1973 models include all the hardware necessary to install them on your car. The inner panel is set up for power or manual windows, with manual windows you merely take a razor blade and cut a small X where the shaft is pushing up the vinyl covering. This is the last step of the installation and is to be done after the panels are mounted to the door.

The kits for 65-73 cars is a bit different, we mount the bezel for the opener strap vertically as shown in the first pic. the strap is attached to the existing control rod, we also provide a rubber rod guide to keep the rod from banging around. Its a very complete kit. The only option you would even consider adding would be our Billet bezel kit, this kit replaces all 6 flimsy plastic OEM bezels that are mentioned above. They securely mount to the door rather than clip on, See last pic

Please contact me if you have any installation problems with our kit.

DP4RVB (For 1974-1994 models)

RSABB-B Billet bezel kit for RSA panels (all years)

All these product are sold by our host
Hope this helps

Bezel kit

The standard RS kit comes with Factory plastic bezels, the Billet bezels are an option.
Sadly we don't make the top piece you are seeking, they can be purchased from one on the many Porsche dismantlers.

A big part of the cost for the kits is the door handles. The part you pull to close the door, not the nylon strap to open the door.

They're rediculously expensive from Porsche, and I'm sure Appbiz has some significant cost in making them also.

If you can find a decent looking, cheap alternative, you're well on your way . . .

Best Regards,
Daryl

The wood-paneled kit shown looks to be from Original Fit Interiors. I have a set in my car (before Appbiz came to market). Recognizing this is an area potentially exposed to water, I added a couple of coats of clear polyurethane to the Luan plywood - just in case.

That's a good idea - I'd attack all the exposed edges too.

But there is really no fix for the incredibly cheap & ugly vinyl on the OFI panels...

That's not my experience. The ones I have look pretty close to the early factory pattern.

Hmmm - well I assumed that mine were OFI b/c they fit the description and have the OFI replacement pockets. But maybe they are something else... or a different vintage. The vinyl is very thin and looks & feels cheap.

These came from Bob @ appbiz as an unfinished kit. All I did was cover the panels with my color choice - they came with all of the hardware needed.

Bob, the one complaint I have about the kit is that it's not possible to get the covers on the door handles without adding spacers. The ones that the kit comes with just aren't thick enough.

There must be a way to avoid the screws at the bottom. When I do mine I will look into this.

Or these screws are on purpose, so it looks more vintage?

Project has finally started '71 911T

OEM bezel issues

SFoster, I agree, we use factory bezels with the kit, we get them right from Porsche. The desigh from Porsche is poor, we have a solution. We are now making Billet aluminum bezel sets, these will never pop off.
You may purchase them by themselves or as an upgrade to our panels
