Anybody want to fix the odometer on my old speedometer?
I took apart my speedo to fix the non working odometer on my 66. Well that never happened so I put it all back together and now I would like to see if anybody who has done this on this forum will do this for me for a fee. I would be more than happy to pay to have it done as I would like to know how many miles I am putting on the beast.

Send it to north Hollywood Speedometer. They will fix it right up.

PO had mine worked on ...
... and I think it was less than $200 but I can't remember what was done. Your best bet is to just call or email.

often just the original vinyl gear that dissolves over time from oil. i think the replacement gear is made of brass.

I tried what was mentioned in the technical article about crimping the gear or whatever but when I had it apart it became evident that detail workings like that are not my forte. Neither is paying someone $200 to fix an odometer but hey what can you do.

On the first day of ownership I pressed reset buttom on the odometer and it stopped working. Ordered a replacement gear from speedometergears.com or something to that sort and fixed it up. First project done on the car
![]() PS. I think I just followed the tech article on Pelican, but I didn't have to take everything apart... At some point in disassembly you can see where the gear needs to go and push it in with some force.

i believe the problem with the 'reset' problem is that you're advised never to press it while the car is moving..i think that's what can jimmy it and stop the odometer.

Well this old mechanical beast knows no reset button. It has a reset mechanical cable and yes I do believe that is why it broke to begin with.

Don't press that button
Unless it's electronic, the trip reset button should never be pushed while the car is moving. That goes for all cars. I did it to my Toyota Avalon years ago and it's been busted ever since. May get ambitious and pull it to send to Palo Alto or a local shop. I cringe to think of the cost.

I just got my electronic speedo (84 Carrera) back from N Hollywood Speedo. Took 10 days round trip to NY and $172. They fixed the odo gear, replaced the dashpot and recalibrated it to the 245/45/16 tires and a bad capacitor as well. Also cleaned it and polished the clear plastic. I was happy to get it fixed correctly(the odo quit late this fall just before I put it away for the winter). I realize you have the mechanical speedo, but I wanted to share my good experience w/ N Hollywood Speedo. Glenn

I just sent mine over to speedometer.com as they were very prompt and courteous on the phone. He said it will be in his shop for about 2 days and then head back to me. So I assume it would safe to expect about 10 total days as well. I will post up a report with either yes or no when I get the piece back.

I ordered the gear from some speedometer gear place for like $25 bucks and did the repair myself. It really, really isn't that hard to do. The only trick to me was figuring out how to get the face off... but found that info on this board too. The factory gear was made from a material that didn't work well with the gear oil used at the time... which actually weakens the gear and causes it to crystalize and crumble over time. Mine was so bad I had to take a small screwdriver and pick it apart off the spindle like a cookie nailed to a wall. It was in many small pieces once completely removed. My new gear was a nylon replacement rather than a brass one as mentioned earlier.
