Question SC to RS replica?

If I was going to build a 73 Carrera RS replica (to eventually the same specifications as BB2), would it be wiser to get an original 73 RS like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320077398871

or should I try to use my 78 SC as a base for one? Has anyone tried to turn an SC into a RS with any success? Or would it be better for me to use a late 60s-early 70s 911 or 912?

Thanks,
Katie

I am thinking of doing the same thing. I think it is better to do your SC, then looking for a pre 74. Sc's are less likely to have rust issues. I am sure you will get plenty of feedback here. Good luck!

I'm thinking the SC also. I've considered 'longhooding' my SC but I can't seem to pull the trigger. It's still original.

I find its always cheaper to finish someone’s unfinished project, and you never get out of them what you have in them, but that’s ok, its all fun.

Ive seen all years converted. Most recently, a 90's C4 converted to 73' RSR by Air Cooled Excellence, i think. No matter what year you choose, just get one without any rust or accidents. With the costs of the early cars still rising, I can see why you would want to spare an original. Plus, the older the car, the harder it is to find a rust free example.

If money is no object, find a 72 like Jack did. Four door RSRs are cool

when you get started, be sure and post project pics during the transformation. Good luck.

That pic taken some time ago. Previous owner had the back end too low, front too high and low profile tyres, all sorted now.

Katie - will you do your own work? If so, what is your level of ability for both body work and for mechanical? I think those might be the deciding factors, given that you live in a no or low snow area.

OTOH, are you so close to the coast that there is salt exposure in the air? Say 1/2 mile...

If I knew what I was doing, I would do as much of it as I could. Given that I'm a complete novice when it comes to automotive work in general, I'd probably have someone else do the work.

And I'm 4 hours from the coast, so there's not much of a risk of salt in the air or on the roads...

Dave makes the body pieces you need to make an SC look like an early car, like th RS.

I would try to find a car that someone has already (partly) converted. The labor costs will be very high for you to convert a car. If I were to convert one, I'd start with an early car, and keep it away from salt.

Not trying to hyjack your thread but a general early car question.
What about a 69 912? I have found a rust free roller for next to nothing.

Just to clarify - do you want to build a 73RS or an RSR (like BB2)? Also, you wouldn't want to convert a real 73RS into a 73RSR replica - that would be crazy.
