Ahhh... the motivational power of new chrome on fresh primer

Yesterday I finished with the adjusting and alignment process of mounting the front fenders, hood and bumper on the front of my 912 Project. Today I had to set the headlights, turnsignals and hood grills in the holes just for a little milestone celebration and get motivated to strip and straighten that front hood and get another step closer to fresh Bahama Yellow!

It's come a long way from this and I've gotta say I'm pretty happy with how my hood gaps have turned out.

So far, so good...

My '66 912 Project

Darryl,
I know every time you post updates, you get tons of accolades. . . . beacuse you deserve it! I've said it before, and I'll say it again - you're the man.

I love this project! It's so cool that you are saving this 912. I also love the previous owner side of the story. Great stuff!

I had the pleasure of seeing this car again today. Wow, Darryl has a beautiful car right now. The color of the primer is my favorite thing. Everything looks so smooth and tight. Darryl showed me a few more gaps that he will go to great lengths to tighten up for probably 2mm movement of sheet metal. I found myself saying "Wow" alot!

Awesome Darryl. Thanks for sharing it with us all!!

Hey James! I enjoyed having you, Jeremy and Zack over and checking out both of your 911 projects. I gotta admit though, seeing 10-year-old Zack go totally GA-GA over my WWII jeep still has me smiling... good thing I didn't have the dummy Ma-Deuce .50 caliber machine gun mounted on the pedestal or we would have never gotten him out of it! I can only hope his parents have the History Channel so he learns more about them.

Hey the rest of you guys! I try to limit my progress postings to major milestones but I've got to thank you guys for keeping me motivated with the very supportive responses... THANKS!

It meant quite a bit to me when Darryl saw my 911 and complimented the quality of the bodywork.

Thanks for the updates.

Thanks guys! Dan, that silver coupe with a 3.2 in it really made my heart go pitter-pat! Very nice car you have there!

I was a paint stripping machine today! Found some BONDO in the nose but I have a stud weld puller so I think I can make it much less pronounced and only require a minimal skim coat to fix!

Darryl,

You do fantastic work!! What I can't figure out is how you keep the shop so clean while doing this. I start much smaller projects and my garage becomes a mess!!

Keep up the good work and keep motivating the rest of us with the updates.

Wow, yesterday your hood was yellow and today stripped. Darryl, what was your method. Did you chemical strip it?

Hey James!

Just about 10-12 iterations of brushing on aircraft syle paint stripper, waiting for it to finish reacting and then using a plastic autobody filler spreader to scrape it off but not to scratch the metal. A little closer look at the hood tonight finds two small holes drilled to pull the dents that were covered in BONDO.

Did you notice the left rockerpanel deco strip is on in today's photo? The hardest part of stripping paint is waiting for the stripper to get done "crackling" as it's lifting the old paint. It should usually sit undisturbed for at least 15 minutes. Little projects like installing deco strips is a good diversion.

I didn't notice the deco strip but now I see it. Very nice. Did you drill holes to mount it? I guess a rubber piece fits in there later? If you ever need help, just holler!

Darryl will you take the fenders, doors, hood, and trunk back off when you paint it? Great work.

Darryl will you sell me the fenders, doors, hood, trunk, and now that I think of it, the tub to me? I think my bored 2.0 would install in your 912 chassis as well as it installed in mine.

Yeah James, This was just to measure and drill the holes then it comes back off... in fact this one was the ratty original deco strip, I have new OEM ones to install there once painted. I'm planning on spraying Wurth anti-rust body wax through those screw holes before I do the deco strip install once it is painted.

I'm doing just like the factory, the fenders stay on, everything else comes off and gets fresh paint on both sides.
