Ain't it great when you think you have a major problem & and it turns out simple?

I had a mysterious speed dependent "knock" that sounded downright scary. Weird...not in the transmission as it wouldn't change whether in gear, neutral , clutch emgaged/disengaged, etc etc. At times it seemed to be coming from the right rear, at other times from the left front. Crazy harmonics I s'pose.

It did increase in volume but not frequency when the suspension was loaded in left turns...went away in right turns... Jacked the car up and spun all the wheels but couldn't find it.

Care to guess what it was?

Zeke 02-11-2007 03:26 PM

CV joint. But, you wouldn't have put up a thread if it was that simple. Probably a golf ball in the trunk. ;)

Dueller 02-11-2007 03:30 PM

Milt

THAT was the first thing I checked...especially since I did an engine drop a few weeks ago. Figure some bolts had backed out. But that wasn't it

911pcars 02-11-2007 03:33 PM

Playing card (or road kill) in the spokes?

Kink in the speedo cable (assuming early gearbox)?

Sherwood

Dueller 02-11-2007 03:35 PM

Not road kill or speedo cable....

Playing card is warmer, but not it...

Type911 02-11-2007 03:42 PM

LR wheel bearing?

Dueller 02-11-2007 03:44 PM

Eleminated wheels bearings as a cause....

Type911 02-11-2007 03:47 PM

Loose wheel stud or cracked Fuch pedal?
Grasping at straws here w/ your playing card hint.

What ever it was, glad it's fixed :)

Dueller 02-11-2007 03:52 PM

Nope...not a wheel stud...

give up?

Type911 02-11-2007 03:54 PM

Bad tire ?

Dueller 02-11-2007 03:57 PM

Nope not a bad tire...they're brand new.

But you're getting close....

VaSteve 02-11-2007 04:01 PM

Rock in the tire.

On my Jeep I once had a child's plastic necklace wedged in the treads... Boy did that make a lot of noise.

Steve 82SC 02-11-2007 04:01 PM

A sticker that was on the new tire.

Steve

Dueller 02-11-2007 04:03 PM

Not a sticker or a rock...but you guys are on FIREhttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...amingdevil.gif

Steve 82SC 02-11-2007 04:06 PM

Valve cap.

Steve

Bearded Viking 02-11-2007 04:07 PM

Old valve stem\cap inside the tire?

Dueller 02-11-2007 04:08 PM

Oh steve....you don't know how close you are...

Here's a hint....

CAMBER CHANGE

Type911 02-11-2007 04:09 PM

Center hub cap, loose wheel weight...loose nut behind the wheel?
I give up !

Zeke 02-11-2007 04:12 PM

Wheel weights hitting?

Steve 82SC 02-11-2007 04:16 PM

A socket or wrench left on a nut somewhere behind the tire?

Steve

Dueller 02-11-2007 04:21 PM

WE HAVE A WINNNNNNNER...Milt, I shoulda known it wiould be you!!!!!!

Yup...a .25 oz wheel weight was hammered on slightly crooked. It would hit the strut housing very slightly when the left front was unloaded. When jacked up the suspension would droop so it wouldn't come into contact. Since I had taken the trunk carpet out the empty trunk essentially became a drumskin and it would sound like all hell was coming apart....

Honorable mention to Pooh (type 911).

Steve 82SC 02-11-2007 04:24 PM

There was alot of spare-time brainpower was used for this, so.....Milt's prize would be.................what?

Steve

FrinkFrog 02-11-2007 04:33 PM

The Golden Wheel Weight Award

Dueller 02-11-2007 04:36 PM

Ummm....prize? Let me check my treasure trove.

Errrrrr.....

Dueller 02-11-2007 04:38 PM
