Transmission Fluid/Drain Question?

Hi everyone,

First, thanks for the input into my transmission woes, I made the adjustments and it is ALOT better.

Second, I got the Swepco 201 oil. I want to run some clean SAE90 thru it first to clear out all the junk. (How much do you think I should drive it before draining again?) I was trying to find the transmission drain plug last night, but only saw the fill plug on the right side of the trans, in front of the differential housing.
Was wondering where I drain it from?

There is a plate on the bottom right below the fill plug with 4 bolts in it, is this the drain? Please let me know where to drain from, and any tips and tricks for getting the car at the correct angle to do this. Also, does anyone know if there is any problem with the Swepco oil and mixing with the small amount of residual oil that I can't drain from the transmission?
Thanks alot for your replies.
Nick.

Nick,

The drain plug is right at the bottom of that enlarged, round section where the ring & pinion reside. I believe the SC's use an aluminum recess plug that takes a large 17 mm allen wrench like 356 and VW plugs have required for years.

And, no, there isn't any problem with the Swepco mixing with other gear oils ... it isn't a synthetic!

Thanks Warren. Has anyone found a 17 or 19mm allen socket at a standard Auto parts store, or anywhere other than ordering the special one? Or should I just order one from PP, Stoddards, etc? Just curious before I dive into installing what one previous post called "Transmission miracle in a Jug."
Nick.

Do you have any VW specialy parts stores where you live? They should have one. In the Seattle area we have Bow-Wow (Autovice) but I don't know how wide they franchise.

Make sure you can get the fill plug out before you open the drain plug.

Ask me how I know....

Most auto parts stores seem to carry one or more 17 mm Allen wrenches or hex drives ... Lisle is one brand of specialty tool I recall, for removing VW drain plugs. You may have to look through several rotating stands or panels of tools to find one ... not all store 'help' will be aware of what they carry or what you want!

Blizzard,

According to my spec book, a 915 holds 'approximately 3 liters' ... which works out to 3.2 quarts with the fudge factor being how long you let it drain! Of course, the gear oil should be hot, at operating temperature, before you drain it!

I have heard from G50 owners that it works well on them, too! And, having used it in a Borg-Warner T-5 transmission, can report it works fine in any transmission!
