How best to ship an engine and transmission?
I bought an engine/trans in Seattle and need to get it back to Dallas. I understand that Forward Air is the prefered shipper. Question is, how best to package it? The engine/trans is still together, can it be palletized anf shipped as is, or does it need to be split? If split, will it fit on a single pallet? Anyone know a crating service in the Seatac area?
Thanks |

J - I bought a tangerine 70T coupe with a great body and weak motor. This 3.0 with Webers came up at the same time and so looks like I'll be doing a transplant in the near future. Just gotta find a way to get this motor crated without imposing too much on friends.

Mark, when I shipped my 3.2 to CA with Forward Air, I just sat it on a pallet, roped it down via the exhaust and motor mount crossmember and then shrinkwrapped the hell out of it. if you do it right, you'll be very dizzy!
Only the motor will fit on a standard pallet. Think it was 496 pounds. will be down within 2 weeks.

Forward air has a weight and overall weight limit. Might want to ask THEM how they want it....

What?!?!

I shipped an engine to Canada. Used nylon straps to secure it to the pallet, then used 1/4 wood panels to enclose the whole thing using drywall screws and scrap 2x2s. Under 500 lbs and with Yellow Freight was about $365 terminal to teriminal.
If shipping engine and tranny together, I would imagine I could have made room for both on one pallet side by side. However, the crate would be heavier on one side. If shipping them still engaged, the pallet will get long but still do-able. Here's a few shots of what I did. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Mark,
I used AAA Cooper and was very happy with their service and timeliness. I agree that only the engine would fit on a standard pallet. My tranny was always shipped seperately. Mark

If you can deal with dropping off/picking up at their terminals, they are the cheapest and most reliable freight shipper, bar-none. They will ship an engine coast to coast in 4 days for approx. 65¢/lb. . They have never damaged anything, nor have they been late, ever, in my experience (knock on wood/cross my fingers). They also do not give you a headache over the whole process, with online tracking, yada yada yada. ![]() I am also a small shareholder so I will plug them . ![]() ![]() Best of luck Scott

I shipped a 911 motor from NC to CA, I don't remember the shipper but I put the motor on a pallet tied it down and built a box around it like the one pictured above. The shipping company wouldn't ship it unless it was boxed as such.

No need to ship. Just have it dropped off at Walkers. I'll take care of it from there. I could be a while before you see it though.
