Is this the updated G50 clutch release kit?
Here are my parts, one of the needle bearings is still stuck in the tranny and it came apart in pieces. I plan to replace all of the o'rings, seals, bearings and clean it up if this is the new version.
They look like the pictures of the updated kit on Pelicans website but there's not a picture of the old one so I just wanted to make sure this was the updated kit. The clutch was replaced about 5 years ago by the PO. I'm also assuming I should replace the pilot and throw out bearings while I'm at it? Anything else? Thanks Brian

I can't tell you if that is the "updated" release fork, nor can I tell you if the needle (edit) bearing has been increased in size. The fork looks like the updated one, but regardless of all that you will do yourself the best service to upgrade the whole thing to the bushing bearing and get rid of the stupid needle (edit) bearing.
The kit is about $160 bucks for the cross-shaft and bearings. You have to buy the fork separately. If the the contact point (with the slave cylinder) on the fork is worn it is recommended that you change it anyhow. Do it right and forget about it. Last edited by MotoSook; 02-13-2007 at 08:11 AM.. |

Thanks for the reply, I'm fairly new to this so please accept my ignorance. Is this the kit your talking about? Replaces the needle bearings with bushings? I think were talking about the same bearings/bushings, when I think of the pilot bearing I think of the one in the flywheel. Is that right or are they both pilot bearings? Also I see they have an update guide tube, does it ever end? Brian

Crap..I was rushing to post so I could get back to another task earlier. But that is not the pilot bearing! (shamed) I meant to say needle bearings! You are correct, the pilot bearing is the one on the flywheel.
So yes, change the bearings to the bushing type. |

Before you spend money, I would try to make sure the one coming out isn't the update kit.
Here is my understanding of the factory update kit. Please take with a grain of salt since I had a shop do the update so this is from my memory from a couple years ago. The factory update kit requires a line bore of the ears on the tranny to accept the larger needle bearings. I don't believe the aftermarket bushing style kit requires hole resize. If the tranny ears have had the holes resized already, the bushing may no longer be an option. I may be all wet on this so I hope I'm not providing bad info.

The steel parts are what you use when your case has been drilled to accept the later Porsche version which is what you have.
You will need to place the steel cap on the end of the shaft and the steel sleve on the other end.

I realize this is a nice to have upgrade but is it a MUST have upgrade. New roller bearings and seals are about $20. New kit is $180. I'm already over budget by the factor of 2.
Curious if it makes that big of a deal, I'm out of the places to hide the reciepts. Brian

If your shaft is in good order then you might want to just get new bearings and seals, if the shaft is pitted then it may be that the "upgrade" looks a little more cost effective.
There must be thousands of happy g50 911's still pootling about with roller bearings on their shafts :-)

you can call EBS, I used thier kit. I don't recommend line boring...the ears are thin enough and have been known to break. Get the neddle bearings out..it is a bad design. I also went to the upgraded fork, and of course all new everything else, disk, resurface (0.005"), pilot, throwout bearing, pp

The early needle bearing setup is junk as you point out but the later version is a lot better and since his case has already been drilled and he wants to save some dollars it might be that just replacing the bearings and seals may be a good option for him.
As far as I know all 964 and 993's use this the later needle bearings so they cant be that bad.
