Hmm, yummy. By my recollects, this was the only car I did not see at Rennsport Reunion II in Daytona about 3 years ago. Of course, there are only two in the world, I believe, and one is probably in the factory museum. Oh, there are also the 961 Paris-Dakar cars too, but they are a whole different breed...

One of them , equipped with the PDK transmission, burned down to the ground @ Lemans. I was watching the feed from the ESPN channel , and it didn't seem to hit anything else but the armco at a slight angle. When the car came to a stop, the driver bailed but the ESPN (onboard) camera kept rolling as smoke filled the cab.
By the time the fire crew got there it was fully engulfed in flame. I think that there was one other one left. Roland Kussmaul (spelling ?) was one of the project engineers on the 959, the Dakar 959 and most likely the 961 also. He co-drove the 959 to a Dakar victory also.

The 961 won LeMans in 1986. Actually it won the GTX classification. OK, so it was the only car in GTX. But a win is a win!
Rothmans livery is 1987. White car is 1986. ![]()

I think the only other race beside the 2 LeMans outings was the '86 Daytona 3 Hour.
![]() Wayne - I don't remember seeing it at RRII?? Was it there? It resides in the EFA Museum in Germany. http://www.efa-automuseum.de/

Impounded??? As Wayne mentioned, there were only 2 961's. One burned, the other is in the EFA museum linked to above.
The Gruppe B rally cars were a different specification completely:

Sad to say the Dakar 959 never ran in Group B, the SC RS was the Group B effort. There is a Dakar 959 living near me; what a car.
