Just to show you how tough these old 911s are...
Here are two stories about a 25-hour endurance race in a '74 Carrera that will make us appreciate our old 911s much more. The stories are in pdf form, so hopefully everyone can read them. It's really inspiring stuff...

Oh yeah, there is a great write up in the local PCA mag on them. Very well done!

"did they argue about, or use, Schnoor washers?"
Probably already had them on the new bolts and facing the correct way.

IIRC, the 74 has those nifty alignment pins. (read: only 4 bolts per CV, and no need for extras.) But now I want to know if your guess is right.

"has those nifty alignment pins"
Maybe (and I believe the pins were intended to carry a shear load across the joint - there's no need for a Spirol pin if only alignment is the goal - a C-section roll pin will do just fine for alignment) - the pins are easy to extract and leave out and if the bolts are properly tightened the pins are redundant. If I had to change an early 4-screw, 2-Spirol pin CV joint in a hurry I would just add a couple of tapped holes for jack screws. |

. .and if the assembly is properly tightened the schnoor washers are redundant.

schnoor washers are redundant.
Yep, just like two of the lug nuts on each wheel.

So you think the lug nuts need schnoors too, eh?
![]() btw, dd, we're just trying to bump your fine story here.

It actually is a fine story. Too bad only four Pelicanites (including myself) have contributed to this thread. I would hate to think there is dwindling interest for what a stock 911 is capable of when racing for 25 hours against automobiles thirty-two years its junior - some of which have much more power than a 1974 Carrera.

Very inspiring! Does anyone know any more details about the car itself (suspension, miles on engine, etc)?

Guys & Gals,
I agree – great story. But it is nothing new. 911s have been doing this for 40 years! I suspect they will be in another 40 years. The number of 911s on this forum that could successfully complete (and win) the 25-hour are enough to fill many fields. The advantage of a race series like NASA is you can be reasonably competitive and NOT have to buy a new GT3 Cup car (with $40K engine overhauls). All the information and technology is available right here on Pelican (as well as many of the parts). The conglomerate volunteer crew is common to most racing efforts. Everyone here should get involved with a team. It is an experience you will never forget and is what makes the amateur racing possible. Even the pros have volunteer crew. I haven’t read the rules for the 25-hour but I suspect the pit stops are regulated to be long (4-5 min) for safety. It is common now to require fueling with the driver out and nothing else happening. When I drove Garretson’s 935K3 (some of the same guys or the next generation), the pit stops were 32 seconds for fuel, tires, driver change and more. We could eek 62 minutes between stops – a 650 hp 935 is considerably more thirsty than a NA 3.6. I was volunteer crew for that car the year before at the 24-hour – and we won with Garretson, Rahal and Redman driving. Best, Grady edit four spelling.

There is an article this month in either Automobile or Car and Driver where the refer to the Porsche perscription. - In other words - if you want to win, buy a porsche - they are legendary in the durability, ease of set up, support, parts, and just plain fast. I believe the '74 is mentioned there too. Cool stuff vern... Take your car to the track and realize how close it is to a real race car being driven today -

That article about the Porsche perception was in Car and Driver magazine. Last year, C&D campaigned two Honda Civic Si cars and did very well with those cars. They're quite strong and finished first in their class. This year they raced diesel BMWs, and didn't fair nearly as well.
