Transmission click???

Whenever I change gears (all gears) the shifter moves back (the way I shifted from) a little and makes a niose (click). It does not come out of gear and otherthan this annoying noise it seems to be shifting fine.

Please any advise would help as I really cannot afford to take my car to the shop right now.

Thanks & best regards,
Booney1golf

What type and year of Porsche are we talking about?

A noise like that in a 911 74-89 usually means the bushings are shot or the assembly needs to be greased.

Sorry that was dumb of me. I have an 85 911 Targa with the 915 tranny. By bushings you mean the plastic bushings that I have bought from pelican (I hope) that go in the hump in the back floorboard. Also the area you mean that needs to be greased is that also accessible with dropping the motor or tranny. Also how hard is it to replace these plactis bushings if that is what you are talking about.

Thanks for your time and help.

It is greatly appreciated as I really need to sell the car.

Best regards,
Booney1golf

Yes, the bushings are located underneath the shifter itself. These wear out after years of use. You simply remove the shifter and housing and replace them. It;'s very easy to do. Do you have any manuals or "101 Projects for your 911"?
If not, do a search here for more detailed information. Type in"shifter bushings".
You can also click on the "tech info center" tab at the top of this page. Lots of tips in the archives.

You may not need to replace the coupler bushings that are located under the panel between the seats. If you have them already, do it.
